iPod classic has no sound output

My iPod classic 160 Gb has gone silent it seems. It is syncing ok but when I plug it into my car or put the headphones in there is no sound although the song seems to be playing.

I went to a small shop that deals in tech as Apple shop won't help anymore he plugged in another set of headphones and it is working and advised me to clean the cable socket at the bottom with a dry toothbrush which I did. Quite a bit of dust came out. Just tried it in the car and it is playing now so thanks for all the help and advice.

Since the song is playing normally but there’s no sound through either the car or headphones, I’d first rule out a simple software glitch.

Try resetting the iPod: hold the Menu and Center buttons together for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. This won’t erase your music.

Also check that the volume isn’t limited under Settings > Volume Limit, and try another pair of headphones if you can.

If there’s still no sound from either output after the reset, that starts to point more toward a hardware problem with the audio output circuitry rather than syncing or the music files.
