Refer to the picture below. You have followed the correct steps to add a contact to Favorites, but you stopped at Step 6, as shown in the picture. That is where the confusion occurs.
Here is the complete process:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Favorites at the bottom-left.
- Tap the “+” (Add) button at the top.
- Select a contact.
- Tap the contact's name.
- You will now see several options, depending on the information and communication services associated with that contact.
For example, if the contact has only a phone number, you may see options such as Message, Call, and Video. Additional options can appear when the contact has other compatible services associated with them, such as FaceTime, WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.
This is where you need to continue
If you want to add Message to Favorites, tap Message rather than assuming that selecting the contact has completed the process.
When you tap Message, you may be presented with additional choices depending on the services available for that contact—for example, SMS, iMessage, WhatsApp, or other supported messaging services.
This is exactly where many people stop at Step 6, thinking they have finished adding the contact to Favorites. They haven't.
Look closely at the screen shown in the picture. You will notice the “∨” and “∧” symbols. These symbols indicate that there are additional options available to explore.
- “∨” (down arrow) indicates that the item can be expanded to reveal more options.
- “∧” (up arrow) indicates that the additional options are already expanded.
So, don't stop at Step 6. Tap the relevant option and explore the additional choices presented. The remaining steps are essentially self-explanatory from the picture.
The important point is that Favorites can contain a specific communication method for a contact—not merely the contact itself. Therefore, the same person can potentially have separate Favorite entries for different methods, such as Call, Message, FaceTime, WhatsApp, etc., depending on the services available on your iPhone.
In short: Step 6 is not the end of the process; it is where you choose exactly how you want to communicate with that contact.
