Safari tabs unclickable in Full Screen with Separate layout on macOS 27.0

Safari tabs cannot be clicked in Full Screen with “Separate” tab layout – macOS 27.0

Hi everyone,

After updating my Mac to macOS 27.0 (build 26A428), I noticed a strange and consistently reproducible issue with Safari.

When Safari’s Tab Layout is set to “Separate”, everything works normally while Safari is in a regular window.

However, as soon as I put Safari into Full Screen, I can no longer switch between open tabs by clicking them with the mouse/trackpad.

The tabs are visible and appear completely normal, but clicking another tab does not switch to it.

What makes this particularly interesting is that the tabs themselves are still fully functional:

  • Command + 1, Command + 2, etc. works and switches to the corresponding tab.

  • Show Tab Overview works, and I can select and switch to another tab from there.

  • If I exit Full Screen, clicking tabs immediately works normally again.

  • If I change Safari Settings > Tabs > Tab Layout from “Separate” to “Compact,” everything works normally in Full Screen.

  • Switching back to “Separate” immediately brings the problem back.

I’ve also tried the following:

  • Force quitting and reopening Safari

  • Restarting the Mac

  • Completely shutting down and starting the Mac again

  • Enabling/disabling “Always Show Toolbar in Full Screen”

  • Checking Safari extensions — I have no extensions installed

None of these made any difference.

So the issue appears to be very specifically related to mouse/trackpad interaction with Safari’s Separate tab bar while in Full Screen mode.

This started only after updating to macOS 27.0 (26A428).

Is anyone else running macOS 27.0 able to reproduce this?

In particular, I’d be interested to know if you can reproduce it by:

  1. Setting Safari > Settings > Tabs > Tab Layout to Separate
  2. Opening several tabs
  3. Putting Safari into Full Screen
  4. Trying to switch between the tabs by clicking them

If anyone has found a workaround that allows Separate tab layout to continue working normally in Full Screen, I’d really appreciate hearing about it.

For now, switching to Compact layout works around the problem, but I prefer the Separate tab layout and would like to continue using it.

Thanks!
