Apple Pencil not working on iPadOS 27

I had not used my iPad during the last week, my Apple Pencil is always in the case with the iPad being charged. Today I updated to 27, took out the pencil and it immediately disconnected. When I put it back in the case it connected again showing a charging status of 100%. I tried deleting it from the Bluetooth devices, it immediately reconnected when I put it back in the case (not showing any message outside the small “apple pencil” balloon) but still doesn’t work.

Is anyone experiencing the same problem? I had no problem the last time I used it, last week, on iPadOS 26.

I've already tried fully resetting the iPad but the problem is still there. I wrote about it on reddit and found a few people who are facing the same problem. Is anyone able to help? Any suggestions about what should I do?

I'm using an M3 iPad with a 2nd gen Apple Pencil.

Your Apple Pencil is exhibiting symptoms of a failing battery - that will not reliably accept or hold any charge. Your discovery of the problem subsequent to updating your iPad to iPadOS 27 may be no more then coincidence.

The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being left discharged for long periods. Even some “new” pencils can exhibit signs of failure out-of-the-box if they are “old stock”. It is essential that if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Never allow an Apple Pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless. Setting aside an unused Pencil, for extended periods, is a recipe for premature death of the Pencil battery.

If the Pencil Battery has failed, the only remedy is to replace the Pencil. If the battery has failed and your pencil is within its one-year warranty, you should look to having it replaced by your retailer or at an Apple Store.

You would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad and Pencil. If a fault is identified, you’ll be in the best possible place to explore your available options:
