Mission control preview is always black

Hello, I have had for a few days, perhaps since the macOS 27 update, the preview of all my Mission Control applications that appears in black. I tried to create a new user, and the problem is not there. Do you have any idea where this can come from?

I found the culprit.

Following your advice, I went through my user-specific login items one by one and the problem came from LanguageTool. The moment I quit the app, all the Mission Control previews came back instantly, and they turned black again as soon as it was running.

I have uninstalled it and everything is back to normal, thank you both for pointing me in the right direction.

  • new user account works normally.
  • Your normal account works in Safe Mode, but the black previews return after a normal restart.

Together, those results make it reasonable to concentrate on third-party software, background processes, extensions, or login components associated with your normal account,

The fact that Mission Control previews work normally in a newly created user account is a useful diagnostic clue.

Before changing anything, confirm that the black previews occur with several different open applications.

If they do, restart your Mac and check Mission Control again.

Then check System Settings >> General >> Software Update and install any available macOS update. Apple recommends keeping macOS up to date. Apple Support — Update macOS on Mac

If the previews remain black, open Terminal and run: killall Dock

The Dock should restart automatically.

Next, check System Settings >> Desktop & Dock >> Mission Control

Apple documents the Mission Control settings here. Apple Support — Change Desktop & Dock settings on Mac

If the problem persists, test the Mac in Safe Mode.

Apple explains how to use Safe Mode here. Apple Support — How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the problem remains in your original account, you could run EtreCheck while logged into that account and review its report for startup items, extensions, background processes, and other software that might be relevant.

EtreCheck is a diagnostic tool; its report would provide information for further investigation rather than establish the cause by itself.

Download the Application Etrecheck  ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

The Application is Not a " Silver Bullet "  and is  only a tool to examine the Hardware / Software used on this computer

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer Hardware / Software used on this computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - Share Report >> Copy , then  paste  >>>> using the Additional Text Icon  <<<<

I would not yet assume that macOS 27.0 is responsible, and I would not reinstall macOS at this stage.

If these tests do not identify the problem, the EtreCheck report could provide useful information for the next step.

Since the problem doesn't happen on a new user account, that suggests that your macOS operating system itself is perfectly fine. The issue is caused by a corrupted preference file or a conflicting third-party background application specific only to your main user profile.

The recent macOS update may have triggered a known bug with window management and Dock animations. Try these steps in order to fix it:

Reset the Mission Control & Dock Preferences

Because the issue is tied to your user account, resetting the files that store your window and layout preferences often solves it instantly.

  • Open the Terminal app (found via Spotlight search or in Applications > Utilities).
  • Copy and paste the following command, then press return:
defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock
  • Note: This will reset your Dock to its factory settings and restart the window manager, clearing out any corrupted view caches.
  • Check if Mission Control displays properly now

If that does not help, then see if the problem is present when you boot in safe mode. That process performs some system cleanup and clears caches, and also disables 3rd party extensions that may cause problems.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Note that I cannot replicate the issue. In Mission Control on my 16" M4 Pro MBP, Spaces with windows open, Spaces with no windows open, and full screen windows (what was in your video) all display content and are not blank/black.
