Old messages showing only timestamp (no content) after iOS 27 update

When older messages appear blank or only show timestamps after a major iOS update, it is usually because your iPhone is re-indexing your message history in the background to make it searchable.

This process can take anywhere from a few hours up to a day depending on the size of your message history. Your messages are safe and should reappear once indexing is complete.

What You Can Do:

While the best solution is often to simply wait and leave your device connected to Wi-Fi and power, you can try the following steps if the issue persists:

• Force Restart Your iPhone — A quick restart can clear up temporary display glitches in the Messages app.
• Check Your iCloud Sync — If you use Messages in iCloud, a weak connection can cause the phone to display empty placeholders while waiting for data to download. Ensure you are on a stable Wi-Fi network.
• Verify Date & Time Settings — Incorrect date and time settings can interfere with Apple's servers and message synchronization. Go to Settings ➢ General ➢ Date & Time and ensure Set Automatically is turned on.

Same. Most of my older messages are from my old android phone but I don’t see how that makes a difference. As some of them show up but some of them don’t. Indexing is finished.

And for the record, the messages are there, locally; I can search for them using keywords or the contacts name. They show up in the search window once you search for them, they just don’t in the actual messaging section, just timestamps.
