Gift Card Purchasing Disaster

I ordered an iPad Pro on August 7th, which is listed as in stock both online and in all my local Apple stores.... but I made a fatal mistake, and paid using gift cards from my Amex credit card points.

When I went through checkout I was under the impression I'd be able to pick it up same day/next day, as I needed it for work. Which is why I went through the process of purchasing gift cards to use for the purchase. Got through to the end of checkout and at the very last step (after already having done the CC point to gift card conversion) the Apple site informed me I would need to have the iPad shipped instead.

Originally it estimated August 11th for delivery. But once I finished checking out it immediately changed to August 13th-17th..... since then it's changed over and over and gotten pushed further and further back. Ive contacted Apple ~ 5 times about this including speaking with multiple "senior advisor"s and "post sales" people. To no avail.

It's now September 16th, and I still haven't received it. It's still listed as in stock and available online and locally.

Finally talked to a chat human today that told me my order is stuck in "general verification" whatever that is. But no progress whatsoever. And apparently I can't get them to refund my credit card points back to my card. So I have ~$1300 stuck in purgatory.

What else is there to do?

(sidenote: I have since made an emergency iPad Pro purchase for work needs as a result of this fiasco, so now I'll have a completely unnecessary one...)

At this point, I’d stop focusing on local inventory. If Apple has confirmed that the order has been stuck in “general verification” since August 7, that’s the part that needs to be resolved.

Since the order apparently hasn’t shipped, check your Order Status page to see whether you can cancel it there. If you can’t, I’d contact Apple Store Customer Service again and specifically ask them to cancel the stuck online order rather than provide another delivery estimate.

One important point: if the order was paid with Apple Gift Cards, Apple’s refund goes back as Apple Gift Card value. Apple can’t reverse the separate Amex Membership Rewards conversion and put those points back on your Amex account.

Since you’ve already bought another iPad for work, cancellation seems like the cleanest way to get the $1,300 out of the pending order.

At this point I think you're right... Ive lost all faith that Apple will make this right. After posting this, someone from Apple's "senior support" or some such finally reached out.... but it took five weeks to get to that point, which is comical. They told me they'd investigate, and then a few hours later I received this:

We’re following up on your recent call to us.  We’ve determined that the quantity of items in your order does not exceed our maximum per customer.  You have 24 hours from the time this email was sent to place a new order at apple.com. You can also call us at 1-800-MY-APPLE at your convenience so that we can further assist you with your order.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the issue with my order, and makes no sense at all. So I'll give them another 24 hours or so and then pull the plug.

Steve Jobs must be rolling over in his grave at the way their customer service has fallen under Cook.

Remember:

  • When emailed by user about cellular failures with the iPhone 4 when holding the base, Steve's response was "Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way."

or famously:

  • “Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.”

Sometimes perspectives don't always match reality. The market cap of Apple when Tim took over was $350 billion and Tim took it to over a $4 trillion evaluation growing more than 10 fold. Not too shabby, and I think Steve would be jumping for joy.

I assure you I paid close attention to what Steve said and did. I am a 35 year Apple product user. Steve valued and understood customer service, and wasn't too hung up on serving shareholders over customers. Customer service has declined precipitously over Cook's tenure, and thank god he's gone.

Now if you have nothing to contribute to resolving the issue Ive run into, I encourage you to find some other thread.
