Severe eye strain and dizziness from font rendering since iOS 26 / 27 (iPhone 16 Pro)

Hello everyone,

Since updating to iOS 26 and now iOS 27 on my iPhone 16 Pro, I have been experiencing massive issues. Within minutes of looking at the screen, I get severe eye strain (specifically a muscle cramp feeling in my upper eyelid) and dizziness.

This is definitely a software issue and not related to the screen hardware: I used this exact same iPhone 16 Pro on iOS 18 for over a year and could stare at the screen for hours with absolutely zero issues or pain.

I noticed that the actual shape of the letters is fine, but there is an artificial softness or "haze" directly around the words (changed font rendering / subpixel behavior / temporal dithering). My eyes constantly try to autofocus this software-induced blur, which drives my ciliary muscles into a permanent cramp.

I have already tried all accessibility settings: I turned on "Increase Contrast", "Reduce Transparency", and pushed the new Liquid Glass slider all the way to the right. None of this stops the underlying pixel behavior at the text edges.

Does anyone have a tip or a hidden trick on how to force the harsh, crystal-clear, and static text rendering of iOS 18 back onto the screen? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is not a common complaint.

Readers here are other users like you. If none of them responds, there may not be any well-known work-arounds.

Apple wants you to have a good experience using their products.

So when issue like this arise, the Moderators will eventually urge you to contact Apple, either through Apple Support, or by making a Free appointment to visit the Genius Bar of an Apple-owned store as if you had a display problem (which you very well might).

it really is the subpixel rendering I tried adjusting the color tint to a warmer tone, but it didn't change anything. I keep getting dizzy, and everything looks slightly blurry whenever I'm on the iPhone—whether I'm reading WhatsApp messages, answering emails, or doing anything else. According to AI analysis, the underlying issue is the following: Since iOS 27, Apple has been using an extremely dynamic rendering method. To embed fonts into the new design, the pixels at the outer edges of the letters are slightly altered in color every millisecond (a permanent micro-flicker known as Temporal Dithering). And there is absolutely no setting to turn this off…

Contact Apple and also send Feedback if you wish.

Don't ignore health issues for any reason and don't rely on the internet for health advice. The installed user base is about 1.5 Billion across 2.5 Billion active devices announced by Apple in January. There is no breakdown for the number specifically with iOS 26 or greater, but you could expect that to involve a huge number of users who are not experiencing any problem. If you think about it, a bug in the OS that resulted in a condition like that across all users would be the top story of every news outlet.

Your complaint is not one commonly seen here.

AI does not KNOW anything, it can only spout back what arbitrary people are saying on the Internet. AI has no respect for expertise, just quantity. AI does not verify that others are talking about the same types of phones, same Hardware, same MacOS.

¿Have you had your Hardware evaluated at the Genius Bar of an Apple-owned store?

Your physical symptoms sound serious. Large numbers of others are not reporting such serious problems.

¿Have you had your vision-related symptoms checked by a competent Ophthalmologist?

When booting my father's iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 27, I immediately feel eye strain and dizziness just looking at the Apple logo on the black background. However, when booting my own iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18, the exact same startup screen is perfectly stable and causes absolutely no discomfort.

To me, this indicates that starting with iOS 26/27, Apple is using a modified graphics rendering system (temporal dithering/subpixel flickering) that is active from the very first second.

I have already submitted this feedback to Apple.
