have you tried the terminal method to reset the password? Boot your Mac into recovery. Then open Terminal (you will find it in utilities in the menu bar) and type resetpassword and follow the on-screen prompts.

Is it telling you to "Wait" a certain amount of time, before you proceed? IF so, wait this out. Fiddle with this reset, and you may never get back into your Mac. Go here: If you Forgot your Mac Login Password - Apple Support

If you have forgotten your Mac login password; after trying three attempts, you should find an option to reset your password with your Apple Account.
From there, you simply follow the prompts and your Mac should simply restart like normal.
NOTE: You may need to sign back into iCloud and other services after the successful login.
