on my Ipad the default web browser is safari. I once used google chrome and this is now my default browser, even though it shows on both chrome and safari that safari is my default web browser.

Consider deleting the Chrome browser App from your iPad:

Alternatively, as a diagnostic exercise, you might install Firefox from the App Store - and follow the guidance already provided.
If you have installed multiple browser Apps on your iPad, verify that you have selected Safari as your default web browser in iPad settings:
Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App - select Safari from the list of available browsers
If you have selected Safari as the default - and Chrome continues to open unexpectedly - change the selection to a different alternative browser (e.g. Firefox) - and then verify that the new selection has occurred.
If the selection has demonstrably changed the default, return the default selection to Safari.
I don’t have a choice for any browsers other than chrome and safari.
iPad default browser setting shows Safari but uses Chrome.
