iOS27 converts mp3 sent in messages to m4a (and is not playable).

Why in iOS27 when I send an MP3 in messages does it get converted to an m4a? It never did that before. I send a lot of the same MP3s in messages for years and now people are receiving M4As that aren’t playable?

This is a definite change as I tried re sending the same file that worked fine pre update and now the receiver gets an m4a. If it matters the receiver has not yet updated and is on 26.

Apparently, this shrinkage may not be new.

Here’s a report with iOS 26:

Probably from iOS 18:

Probably at least as far back as iOS 14, based on some other discussions.

One possibility is mentioned in a couple of places indicates the transfer is via MMS, and the files are getting shrunk using 3GPP. Which reportedly makes for very small and lossy transfers.

Or it’s different and an iOS 27 bug (and not MMS), and you’ll want to log feedback.
