Connect Apple Studio Display to Windows work laptop

Hi all,

I have an apple studio display, plugged into my mac studio.

On the same desk, I have windows (HP probook) work laptop which is connected, via a hub, to my windows monitor. For work i use the laptop and external monitor.

I want to know if it's possible to use the studio display as a monitor for my work laptop? and ideally to switch between that and my mac studio easily, but that's fine if that's not possible.

I plugged my work laptop into the studio display via hdmi with a usb c adapter for the studio display, but it didn't detect. I'm not sure if the mac studio itself needs to be turned off? or is the work laptop limited somehow?

very confused by all of this because of the hub, the mac studio, the studio display and all the connections involved. any help is appreciated, thanks

It appears at least HP ProBook x360 435 G8, HP ProBook x360 445 G8, HP ProBook x360 455 G8, HP ProBook 400 G9 Series, and HP ProBook 600 G9 Series can support Thunderbolt, and quite possibly some other ProBook models.

But I’d confirm that with the tech specs for the specific model ProBook, as well as which Thunderbolt version.

So that I don’t have to spend an aeon combing a whole list of candidate HP ProBook tech specs, which model ProBook?

NOT that computer.

The Mac Studio has ThunderBolt-5 inputs, ONLY. They are backward compatible to Thunderbolt-4 or ThunderBolt-3

To get it to act as a simple display for another computer, that computer must have left the factory with a Built-in Thunderbolt-3, 4, or 5 port.

To use its other (than display) features you would need to be running a very recent version of MacOS.

If you had a more advanced Windows machine with a Thunderbolt port, then you likely could connect it with an appropriately short Thunderbolt cable and get a display, but not likely any additional features.

We have NO reports of success connecting through the 10 G bits/sec USB-C ports. They are likely not wired to the display at all. IF they were (contrary to expected fact) , that could only support a 2K resolution at the very best.
