Ipad 9th gen stop charging after ios 27 update.

My iPad 9th Gen completely drained its battery after being on iOS 27 for 2–3 days. When I tried turning it on, I saw the red battery icon, and the iPad was getting slightly warm, which is usually normal when it’s charging. I put it on charge for a couple of minutes and then tried turning it on by pressing the power button. Suddenly, the red battery icon disappeared, and the iPad became completely unresponsive and cold. Now it doesn’t show anything at all, even when I plug it in.

Failure to charge subsequent to updating your iPad to iPadOS 27 may be a coincidence. That said, if you are using a USB PD compliant Power Adapter, charging is in part influenced by software.

These support pages should help with troubleshooting battery and charging issues:

Charge and monitor the iPad battery - Apple Support

If your iPad won't charge – Apple Support

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Many recent models of iPad are supplied with an Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported.

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

There have now been many reports of charging issues with iPad9 subsequent to updating to iPadOS 27/27.0.1 - and as such, the growing weight of evidence suggests introduction of a software bug affecting the iPad's charge controller.

In the first instance, you would be well advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

In addition, for all those impacted by this issue, you should submit a Bug Report via Apple's Product Feedback portal - as, until Apple receives a sufficient volume of reports, it may not assign resources to investigate and resolve the issue. For iPad and iPadOS:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting a report, ensure that you include details of your iPad model and the installed version of iPadOS within the body pf the report. Don't rely on the pick-list alone as this may not include the most recent version of iPadOS.

I agree with price1. The timing is hard to ignore. Our high school has a fleet of ninth-generation iPads used across all four grades. Since the September 14 update to iOS 27, 18 of them have stopped charging or turning on. Every affected iPad was updated before the battery problem began.

I reported this to Apple Support and was told we were the first school to report the issue. I’m now wondering how many other schools are seeing the same thing. Has anyone else experienced this with ninth-generation iPads?

Over the last few days, we've had 5 out of about 100 9th Gen iPads with IOS 27+ come in to the support office failing to charge. This is very not cool. At this point, one of them, when left on a charger for a full day, resumed normal behavior. Try telling a student that they can't use their iPad today and need to wait and try again tomorrow. They can't exactly take a quiz in Canvas using a pencil and paper.
