Final Cut Pro just goes to the wheel of death since upgrading to Golden Gate 27. Help resolving this would be much appreciated!

Re: Final Cut not opening since upgrading to Golden Gate 27

Wondering how long it is since you upgraded your MacBook Air.

ie: A Mac may just need time for the process that continues on after a major update has been installed ... eg: resources may be in use for re-indexing and more.

About Apple software updates - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Immediately after completing an update, particularly a major release, you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance. This is normal, because your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background, including indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps."

Else : There are various possible causes underlying the situation: Things to try:

  • Try quitting (or force-quitting if necessary) Final Cut.

Then restart your Mac via Apple Menu > Restart.

Check whether or not Final Cut opens normally now

  • You might want to check that your Mac still has the amount of memory / storage space it needs (approx. 50 Gb available, (pref. more if used for intensive work) in order to operate smoothly: (System Settings > General > Storage)

  • Any third-Party (non-Apple) apps you find necessary may need updating so that they remain compatible with your MacOS
  • There may be interference from unnecessary third-party apps like virus-checkers, ad-blockers, cleaners, and the like - best to use un-installers from their developers. VPN (if not supplied by an employer) can also cause issues.

Start by deleting FCP preferences.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

If the issue persists:

  • which version of FCP? If not the current one, make a copy of it for safekeeping and update.
  • how much free space on your system drive? You should strive to keep at least 15-20% free space
  • Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box. This will give us a chance to look for possible causes of trouble

Welcome and thank you for reaching out. 🤗

If you have any antivirus software installed, then remove it A.S.A.P. as they interfere with the system operations and performance.

If you don’t have anything like that installed, then try the following:

First, let’s see if this issue happens in Safe Mode:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac. As you continue to hold the power button, your Mac turns on and loads startup options. When you see Options, release the power button.
  3. Select your startup disk. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name.
  4. Press and hold the Shift key, then click the “Continue in Safe Mode” button below your startup disk.
  5. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

If the strange behaviors do not occur, then it may possibly be a software issue.

If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode:

Leave safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then try to reproduce the issue.

If the issue doesn't return, it might have been resolved by the other things that safe mode did at startup, such as checking your disk and clearing caches.

If the problem persists, then let’s try this:

Good luck! 👋🏼😉
