For your MacBook Pro 16″ running macOS 27.0, first reproduce the problem and note exactly when Contacts becomes unresponsive—for example, immediately after opening, when selecting a contact, while searching, or during another specific operation.

Also note whether the problem occurs every time or only intermittently. This information should be recorded before making changes.

Next, check System Settings > General > Software Update and install any available macOS update.

Apple recommends updating macOS when an application stops responding. Apple: If an app on your Mac stops responding

If Contacts becomes unresponsive, quit it with Option-Command-Esc, restart the Mac, and test it again.

If the problem continues, open Contacts > Settings > Accounts and temporarily disable Contacts for your accounts.

Test Contacts, then re-enable the accounts one at a time.

Apple documents that disabling an account temporarily removes its contacts from the Mac without removing the account. Apple: Contacts account settings

If you use iCloud Contacts, check whether your contacts are accessible through iCloud.com. This provides a separate check of access to the iCloud contacts. Apple: iCloud Contacts

Then create a temporary macOS user account and test Contacts without initially adding your Internet accounts.

Comparing the behaviour with your normal account can help determine whether the behaviour also occurs in another user environment.

If the problem persists, test the Mac in Safe Mode. Apple describes Safe Mode as a way to help identify whether problems are caused by software that loads when the Mac starts up.

When Contacts is unresponsive, open Activity Monitor and check its status.

If you must force-quit Contacts, Activity Monitor can generate a Spindump, which Apple identifies as a diagnostic report for an unresponsive application that has been terminated using Force Quit. Preserve the report for Apple Support. Apple: Run system diagnostics in Activity Monitor

As a later general system check, Disk Utility > First Aid can be run on the appropriate startup volume. This is a general storage/filesystem check, not a Contacts-specific repair. Apple: Repair a storage device using Disk Utility

I would avoid deleting Contacts data or permanently removing accounts while the cause remains unknown.

The results of these tests—including exactly when the problem occurs, whether it occurs in another user account or Safe Mode, and any relevant diagnostic reports—can give Apple Support specific information for further investigation.
