Voice messages bug in message.app

If an audio message disappears after it has been played, it generally means that the message has not been set to Keepand the Messages app is following its automatic audio-message expiration setting.

There are two possibilities:

1. The “Keep” option was not selected in time — After an audio message is played, you need to tap Keep within the available retention period (typically 2 minutes) if you want to preserve that particular audio message.
2. Messages is not set to keep audio messages permanently — Check Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages and make sure it is set to Forever. This setting controls how long messages are retained rather than allowing them to be automatically removed according to the default retention behavior.

Therefore, if you want audio messages to remain available after they are played, either tap Keep promptly after playback or set Keep Messages to Forever.

Audio Message Compatibility Test

I conducted a cross-version test of Audio Messages in the Messages app using two iPhones:

• iPhone 13 — iOS 26.6.2
• iPhone 13 Pro — iOS 27

I tested the exchange of Audio Messages in both directions:

1. Audio Message sent from the iPhone 13 (iOS 26.6.2) to the iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 27). Pic 1
2. Audio Message sent from the iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 27) back to the iPhone 13 (iOS 26.6.2). Pic 2

Test Results

In both directions, the Audio Messages were successfully sent, received, and displayed in the conversation on both devices.

More importantly, the Audio Messages remained present in the conversation on both iPhones after being received.

I also tested Message reactions from both devices. Reactions added from either side were successfully recorded and were visible on both devices. This indicates that the conversation state, including the Audio Messages and their associated reactions, was being synchronized correctly between the two devices despite them running different iOS versions.

Conclusion

Under the conditions of this test, I could not reproduce any issue with Audio Messages being removed, disappearing, or failing to synchronize between an iPhone 13 running iOS 26.6.2 and an iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 27.

The test also confirms that Message reactions work correctly in both directions between the two iOS versions.

Therefore, if another user is experiencing Audio Messages disappearing or reactions not being retained, the issue may be specific to their particular configuration, conversation, Apple Account/iMessage state, network conditions, or another environmental factor, rather than being an inherent compatibility problem between iOS 26.6.2 and iOS 27.

This test represents the behavior observed on these two devices and does not, by itself, establish that the issue cannot occur under other configurations.
