If it is passcode-locked and you cannot remember the correct passcode, or guess it within 10 tries, the iPad will go into a state where the only way to get back in will be to reset it and wipe everything on it, possibly with the aid of a computer. Any data that exists only on the iPad (not backed up anywhere, synchronized to iCloud, etc. will be lost. However, resetting an iPad will not clear Activation Lock. If the iPad had Find My turned on, you will need to know the appropriate Apple Account ID and password to successfully reset the iPad and get back in.
