Add a blank space to the Dock

I don't know of a way to add a BLANK space.

But what I do is to add an icon I don't expect to actually use (or one that mostly Reports from the Dock without my needing to click on it) to separate groups of icons from one another.

candidates include:

Clock -- which can be set to show Analog Time without opening the App

Calendar -- which has the advantage of reporting todays date without opening the App

Calculator -- compact icon that just sits there, I rarely use the one on my Mac.

iPhone Mirroring -- compact icon that just sits there, I have never used it

Another interesting one that I do use is Activity Monitor. Its Dock icon can be set to show CPU History levels (with the App running).

You can add a blank space (including other preference customizations) in the dock via a third party app - one that I personally use with no issues is the TinkerTool app by Marcel Bresink.

TinkerTool is great tool!

Rather than modifying interfaces, it mostly exploits Settings the developers built-in, but Apple decided not to fully activate (for whatever reason).

TinkerTool's changes can also be easily backed out, all at once, to return your Mac to its previous settings.

Expanding the Dock Across the Entire Screen:

You Can't. The Dock is currently only dynamic (it increases as you add to it). You cannot make the standard macOS Dock stretch completely from the left edge to the right edge of your screen by default. If this were an option, that might make it appear as such.

Do your Part: Inform Apple of this idea. You'd do so by providing Apple Feedback on this. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more feedback thy receive from its users, the more likely they will know what their customers prefer, and what options to include in macOS versions to come.

2. Select: "Feature Request" for the "Feedback Type"
3. Select: "User Interface" for the "Feedback Area"
4. Comment: on why you want this to be an option, and why. Include the URL of this thread.
5. Proceed from there as necessary
