What type of inverter? It should be a pure sine wave inverter or you could damage some of the laptop's electronic circuits. If the original charger no longer works, perhaps something was damaged. There is a small chance that the original charger is faulty, so you should take both the laptop and its charger to be tested at an Apple Authorized Service Provider at this point.
