Printer recommendation for MacBook Air and iPhone

Any printer that supports AirPrint is the way to go. Other than that, the features are up to you. What are you printing? Do you need a scanner as well? Personally, I have an HP multifunction printer/scanner with two trays, one with letter sized paper and the other with 4x6 photo paper.

Any major brand printer that supports AirPrint. Most of them do these days. AirPrint is a wireless printing framework that doesn’t require drivers.

I lean towards the Brother.com line of AirPrint compatible laser printers.

I have had AirPrint compatible printers since 2011, and I’ve never needed to install any drivers. Even if the manufacturer stops supporting the printer, AirPrint allows you to still use the printer.

It is also useful if the printer manufacturer allows 3rd party ink or toner, so even if the manufacturer stops making compatible ink or toner, a 3rd party can still supply them.

Local preference is Brother Laser/LED with AirPrint, with TWAIN and ICA when scanning, with IPP/IPPS for broadest use, and non-subscription.

Not sure what issues you had, my aforementioned printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 that I bought seven years ago to replace another HP printer (because I wanted one with two trays).

It’s used with six Macs in the house, and occasionally from one of the many iPhones and iPads we also have. Have never had any issues with connectivity. YMMV.

In the past I have owned several HP laser & inkjet printers, and I never had connection issues.

I switched to Brother.com for my current printer because HP stopped allowing 3rd party toner, and HP’s was getting expensive.

If your HP is a network printer, I would look to see if there are network issues. If WiFi, look for WiFi interference or obstructions between the printer and the WiFi router.

If USB attached, try another cable.

Also make sure the printer is not loosing power. I had a co-worker that kept having their desktop computer rebooting. Eventually he found out the electrical outlet had a wire that was not properly connected and would disconnect for a moment, causing the computer to loose power. So either put the printer on an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), or get the outlet checked. I would use UPS, as they are always useful with other computer gear, and they make noise when they loose power, so it us also a bad outlet detector 😎
