Logic Needs Larger Snap Value Options - Or Allow Them To Be Customized

Logic snap values are too limited! Could the product engineers please allow users to customize snap values, or at least provide more macro snap values that would make it easier to "snap to phrase". By that I mean this: Currently logic's snap values range from "smart" to "division" to "beat" to "measure" - and those are extremely useful for dragging things and keeping them in time. I simply want the option to "snap to 4 bars, 8 bars, 16 bars, or even custom" this would allow quick and easy measurement of a phrase without having to count the bars by sight, which is not easy. Practical application: your artist wants to take an 8 bar phrase from a "scratch track" and insert it into an arrangement that occurs later in the session. Snap to 8 would allow you to easily do this. It would also allow you to curser highlight exactly 8 bars so you do not have to eyeball the duration. This simple feature would greatly speed up structural editing and make it more fun and easy to use.

Just add the option!

Thanks. I'll forward this to them.

The alternative of using regions is not quite the move, because regions often extend or fall short of the actual 4/8/16 bar phrases. Locators, you have to manually define the length, which is the headache of having to count bars by sight in the transport - which is confusing if grabbing a segment in a long-format "idea session" where there could be 20 minutes of scratch ideas.

Markers are the closest workaround, but in a session like this, markers must also be manually added. Often in real time while marking certain sections, the actual start of the markers is arbitrary based on the musical parts marked for review.

The cleanest feature would be a "set custom snap value" so that you can confidently and quickly grab your phrases, split them and move them around.

Open to hearing any other creative ideas

Yes, couple of reason why that is not ideal. First, the loop function of the locators are necessary in other areas of the session. The room may want you to loop the beat in one section - and moving the locators will cause you to lose the loop. This is especially cumbersome if you have dialed in the loop to include a pickup bar, or other irregular duration - then having to use it to cut a previous section, then redial it while the room has to wait in silence.

Secondly, assume you’re grabbing the proverbial 8 bar section from early in the scratch session. To move the locators rather than to redraw them, you would have to zoom out, locate the locator and carefully drag it back to the section you wish to copy, which always has some oddity or other… you would also need snap to bar just to move the loop correctly. Too many of us engineers and creators are at the mercy of these little tasks that add up to tedious workflow and can bring down the vibe of the session if not done fast and accurately.

This is why a simple “snap to custom value” would add tremendous flexibility to what should be a very simple task.

Hit me with more workarounds if you know any!

Just thought of the finishing touch of this new feature.

imagine you marquee select an area with “snap to custom value: 8 bars” but your selection starts in the middle of a phrase and you are stuck with 8 bars not beginning at the top of the phrase. Simply hold the option key while starting the marquee selection to adjust the starting point.

chat, send this to Apple and kindly ask them to add this 🤌
