Payment method update prompts are not triggered simply because you have installed an iOS update.



These prompts are generally associated with a subscription that is approaching its renewal date, or with a payment method that needs to be updated or re-authorised for the upcoming charge. The timing of the prompt can therefore coincide with the date on which you happen to update iOS.

For example, if your iOS update and a subscription renewal happen to fall on the same day, you may see the payment-method prompt immediately after updating iOS. However, the coincidence in timing does not establish that the iOS update triggered the prompt. The underlying reason is the subscription's billing or payment status, not the software update itself.

It is therefore misleading to say, “I updated iOS and then Apple asked me to update my payment method, so the iOS update caused it.” The two events may simply have occurred at around the same time.

In other words, correlation in timing does not mean causation. The payment prompt is related to the subscription/payment cycle; the iOS update is merely an unrelated event that happened to occur at the same time.
