FaceTime Call and Video function not working

I can open FaceTime on my MacBook Pro, But I can not FaceTime any one. In my contacts the call and video icons are 'greyed" out. I should be able to click on the call or video icon to start a call or FaceTime. I can not. In the FaceTime app the same applies. Is there a fix for this?
