Two Studio Displays show different white points and color temperatures
Title: Two identical Studio Displays have different white points / color temperature
Post:
Hi everyone,
I have two identical Apple Studio Displays connected to the same Mac mini, and I've noticed that their white points/color temperatures don't match. One display appears noticeably warmer/yellower, while the other appears cooler/whiter.
Both displays are the same model/generation and I have checked the following:
Same Apple Display (P3-600 nits) preset
Same brightness level
True Tone OFF on both
Night Shift OFF
Same firmware version
Both connected to the same Mac mini
Swapped the Thunderbolt cables/ports — the difference remains with the same physical display
Physically swapped the left/right positions of the displays — the warmer color follows the physical display, so it doesn't appear to be caused by room lighting or position
Completely powered down the Mac and displays and tested again after powering them back on
The difference is particularly noticeable when displaying the same white Word document on both screens.
I also opened Pro Display Calibrator. Both displays show “Original factory calibration” and “No adjustment.”
Interestingly, Fine-Tune Calibration and Visual Fine-Tune are greyed out on both displays; only Full Calibration is available. I also tested with only one Studio Display connected, but those options remained greyed out.
My questions are:
Is this amount of white-point/color-temperature variation normal between two identical Studio Displays?
Has anyone experienced one Studio Display looking warmer/yellower than another under identical settings? Why would Visual Fine-Tune and Fine-Tune Calibration be unavailable?
Is there another test I can perform to determine whether one of the displays is outside Apple's factory calibration tolerance before contacting Apple?
I haven't performed a Full Calibration because I don't have a colorimeter/spectroradiometer and don't want to alter the original factory calibration unnecessarily.
Any advice from people using multiple Studio Displays or with experience calibrating them would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
