Mac Contacts app does not display contact photos, while iPhone and iPad display them correctly

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the Contacts app on my Mac where contact profile photos are not displayed correctly.

My contacts are synced through iCloud, and the same contacts are also available on my iPhone and iPad. The contact photos appear normally on my iPhone and iPad, but on my Mac, the photos are missing or appear as a blank/gray circle.

Here is what I have observed:

  • Contact photos are displayed correctly on my iPhone and iPad.
  • The same contacts are synced to my Mac through iCloud.
  • On my Mac, the contact information itself is synced correctly, but the contact photos are not displayed.
  • This also happens with contacts whose Contact Poster/profile photo has been updated recently.
  • I have already checked that iCloud Contacts syncing is enabled on all devices.
  • I have also tried restarting the Mac and resetting/rebuilding the Contacts database, but the issue remains.

I’m using a MacBook and the latest available version of macOS.

Has anyone experienced the same issue? Is there a way to force macOS Contacts to re-download or refresh the contact photos from iCloud?

Thanks in advance!

With macOS 27.0 on your 14-inch MacBook Pro, the fact that your contact details sync correctly while the photos are missing suggests that the problem may be specific to how Contacts on the Mac is handling contact images.

It does not, by itself, tell us exactly what is causing the problem.

The first thing I would check is an affected contact under iCloud > All Contacts in the Contacts sidebar.

This matters because Mac Contacts can combine contacts from several accounts. Apple identifies the iCloud section as the place to view contacts stored in iCloud. (Apple Support)

Then check that same contact at iCloud.com Contacts.

If the contact photo is visible there, and also on your iPhone and iPad, but is still missing from Mac Contacts, that would point more toward a Mac-specific problem than a general iCloud synchronization problem.

Apple documents that iCloud Contacts keeps your contacts synchronized across your devices and iCloud.com.

I would also distinguish between the contact photo/avatar and Contact Poster on the iPhone and the Contact Photo & Poster feature in Mac Contacts.

Apple documents these features, but it does not state that every Contact Poster must necessarily appear as the contact-card photo on the Mac. (Apple Support)

For one affected contact, therefore, check that a conventional contact photo is actually present on iCloud.com rather than relying only on the fact that a Contact Poster appears on the iPhone.

Give iCloud a little time to sync, then check the same contact again under iCloud > All Contacts on the Mac.

Since you have already restarted the Mac and rebuilt the Contacts database without fixing the problem, I would not repeat those steps for now.

Apple does not currently document a separate command for forcing Mac Contacts to re-download contact photos or Contact Posters.

If the photo is definitely present in iCloud and on your other Apple devices but remains blank only on the Mac, that would be good evidence of a Mac-side Contacts photo/display or synchronization problem.

At that point, it would make more sense to investigate the macOS 27 Contacts synchronization/cache behaviour rather than rebuild the Contacts database again.

For reference, Apple's relevant documentation is the Contacts User Guide for Mac, Set up iCloud Contacts on your devices, and Add or change contact pictures in Contacts on Mac.
