The current version of macOS is 27.0.1. Based on your post you are running an older version, so the first step is to update your Mac to the current version.

See: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

To fix Touch ID on your Mac, restart your computer, clean the sensor, and re-add your fingerprints in System Settings.

Quick Fixes

  • Clean the sensor: Wipe the Touch ID button with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to remove oils or dirt. Make sure your finger is also clean and dry.
  • Restart your Mac: A basic reboot resets stuck background system processes
  • Re-add your fingerprint: Go to System Settings > Touch ID & Password, hover over your existing fingerprint and click the (X) to delete it, and click Add Fingerprint to set it up again.

  • Check system requirements: Remember that macOS requires your password after a fresh restart, if you haven't logged in for 48 hours, or after five failed fingerprint attempts.

External Keyboard Troubleshooting

  • Check connection: If you use an external Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, turn the keyboard off and back on.
  • Plug in via USB: Connect the keyboard directly to your Mac using a USB cable, wait 10 seconds, and try using Touch ID again

Personally, on my 16" M4 Pro MacBook Pro running 27.0.1, I have no issues logging in or responding to login credentials prompts with Touch ID on the internal keyboard or on my external Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad, so this does not appear to be an issue with maCOS but rather with your specific Mac.

Since your 2023 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 stopped accepting fingerprints after the macOS 27.0 update, and Add Fingerprint does not detect your finger, I would start by restarting the Mac and trying again under System Settings >> Touch ID & Password >> Add Fingerprint.

Make sure both your finger and the Touch ID sensor are clean and dry. These are among Apple's recommended steps for Touch ID problems. Apple — If Touch ID isn't working on Mac

It would also be useful to check whether an existing fingerprint still works to unlock the Mac or authenticate an action.

This helps establish whether the problem is limited to enrolling a new fingerprint or affects Touch ID more generally.

Since you are already running macOS 27.0.1, check System Settings >> General >> Software Update to make sure no newer update is available. Apple — Update macOS on Mac

If Add Fingerprint still does not detect your finger, test it in Safe Mode.

On your M2 Mac, shut down the Mac, then press and hold the power button until Loading startup options appears.

Select your startup disk, hold the Shift key, and choose Continue in Safe Mode. Once started in Safe Mode, try Add Fingerprint again.

This is a useful diagnostic step because it tests Touch ID with fewer software components loaded during startup.

If the sensor still does not respond in Safe Mode, run Apple Diagnostics.

Shut down the Mac, press and hold the power button until the startup options appear, then follow the instructions for Apple Diagnostics. The results may provide useful information about a possible hardware issue. Apple — Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

If the problem continues, the results from these tests—especially whether an existing fingerprint works, whether enrollment works in Safe Mode, and what Apple Diagnostics reports, will provide useful information for determining the next step with Apple Support or service.

I had that problem and followed this advice to solve it: went to systems settings, Touch ID and Password, deleted my fingerprint (had to type my password to do this), then restarted my Mac, then went to systems settings, Touch ID and Password, clicked on add fingerprint icon, re-entered my fingerprint, clicked on Done, and Voila, it worked again. Also, I did clean my Touch ID key before entering my fingerprint. Good luck!

I'm experiencing the exact same issue on my Mac mini with a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID after updating to 27.0.1.

After restarting my Mac, the "Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac" option is enabled in System Settings. However, as soon as I lock my Mac, Touch ID isn't offered and I'm forced to enter my password. After unlocking, the option becomes grayed out in Settings, and Touch ID stops working entirely, including for other authentication tasks.

I've tried connecting the keyboard directly via USB, restarting the biometric authentication services (`biometrickitd` and `coreauthd`), and checking the Touch ID configuration using Terminal. Everything appears to be enabled, my fingerprints are still registered, and the services are running normally.

I also checked the system logs and noticed repeated `generalLockoutStateChanged` messages from BiometricKit around the time the issue occurs.

So far, nothing has helped. It seems like macOS is somehow disabling biometric authentication after locking the Mac.

Has anyone found a solution?
