Logic Pro X monitoring broken

In Logic Pro X, how do I disable software monitoring for when only R is enabled, but does allow software monitoring when I enabled and for multiple tracks?

If I disable software monitoring, then I doesn't work any more. If I enable "Input monitoring only for the focused track", then I can't software monitor multiple tracks.

Auto Input Monitoring doesn't seem to help with this either.

I want to be able to monitor the input and others before recording and then turn off the input monitoring while I record.
