iPhone 16 Pro Max: LinkedIn, DoorDash, Podcasts hang at launch across iOS updates (0x8BADF00D, nsurlsessiond bottleneck)
My iPhone 16 Pro Max (iPhone17,2) has a recurring, intermittent problem: apps freeze on their launch screen and eventually get killed back to the Home Screen. It started with LinkedIn and DoorDash on iOS 26.6.1 and now affects Apple's own Podcasts app on iOS 27.0 (24A437).
The crash logs point to a shared system bottleneck, not three broken apps:
- The LinkedIn and DoorDash reports (0x8BADF00D, scene-create watchdog timeouts, ~19s allowances, under 1s of app CPU time) show the main thread blocked in a synchronous XPC reply while creating a background NSURLSession: setupBackgroundSession → xpc_connection_send_message_with_reply_sync → Mach wait. DoorDash reaches it through FullStory.framework, LinkedIn through VoyagerLibs.framework — different app code, same system wait. The two failures span different boot sessions (across a reboot), with successful launches in between.
- The Podcasts report is a system stackshot that traces the blocking chain explicitly: Podcasts main thread → nsurlsessiond thread on com.apple.nsurlsessiond.session-manager → worker thread on com.apple.nsurlsessiond.session-archive-queue. Nine cloudd thread dependencies lead to the same archive worker, so multiple nsurlsessiond clients are stuck behind it.
Careful notes: the archive worker was TH_RUN with a captured kernel stack — the snapshot doesn't prove a deadlock vs. slow progress. Its ~3,200s kernel / ~356s user CPU counters are thread-lifetime totals, not CPU burned during the 20-second hang. Frames are unsymbolicated numeric offsets. I'm describing an investigation target, not a confirmed root cause.
Troubleshooting already completed (please don't re-suggest): repeated force-quit/reopen, delete + reinstall of affected apps, repeated force restarts, removed all VPN configurations, Reset Network Settings, tested with Low Power Mode off (failure recurred), updated iOS 26.6.1 → 27.0 (issue persists, now including Podcasts). Also saw App Store downloads stuck pending and Software Update spinning on Sept 24 — possibly related, not confirmed.
Apple Support (chat + senior advisor call, case *** couldn't get past the standard script; the only offer was a full erase-and-set-up-as-new, which I haven't done.
What I'm looking for:
1. Has anyone else seen 0x8BADF00D scene-create hangs across unrelated apps, especially with nsurlsessiond in the chain?
2. Any supported way to capture a sysdiagnose during an episode, before restarting?
3. Any targeted step short of a full erase worth trying?
I have five .ips diagnostic files (DoorDash 9/15, LinkedIn 9/15 and 9/16, Podcasts 9/26 and 10/1) and can share them through a private/secure channel — not posting full system diagnostics publicly. Feedback Assistant report *** also filed.
Device: iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone17,2. App versions: LinkedIn 2025.1113.1641 (9.31.6541), DoorDash 8.35.0 (663006).
