On an iPhone, there are two different ways to record a conversation, depending on what you are trying to record:
1. Cellular call recording
If you are on a supported version of iOS and in a supported country or region, iPhone can record a cellular phone call between you and another person. The recording uses the iPhone’s microphones and is designed specifically for telephone calls. In supported regions and languages, iOS can also generate a transcript of the call in the Notes app. If your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence, it can additionally provide a summary of the recorded call in Notes.
However, call recording is subject to regional and language availability, as well as local laws concerning consent and recording telephone conversations. Apple currently states that call recording is not available in Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
2. Recording an interview or other conversation with Voice Memos
If you are conducting an interview, meeting, discussion, or simply want to record a conversation that is taking place around you, you can use the built-in Voice Memos app. In this case, the iPhone is simply using its microphones to capture the surrounding sound. This is fundamentally different from cellular call recording because Voice Memos is recording the audio in your environment rather than recording the telephone call itself.
So, although both methods ultimately use the iPhone's microphones, they are handled differently by iOS. Cellular call recording is an integrated telephone feature with specific regional restrictions, while Voice Memos is a general-purpose audio recorder.
If you are using iOS 27 or later, Apple Intelligence can provide call summaries on compatible devices, including iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, subject to Apple Intelligence language and regional availability and any applicable usage limits.
For the most current list of supported countries, languages, devices, and features, Apple maintains its iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability page.
