Pointer hover highlight gets stuck on screen (iPadOS 27 + Universal Control)

Setup: iPad on iPadOS 27, controlled via Universal Control from a Mac.

Problem: The pointer hover highlight — the rounded-rectangle effect iPadOS shows over tappable elements (the "lift" effect on app icons, the "highlight" effect on Settings rows) — sometimes gets stuck on screen. After I move the Mac's cursor back off the iPad, the white rounded-rectangle box stays frozen in place. It doesn't follow the cursor and doesn't dismiss on its own. Photos attached (other areas blurred for privacy).

Ruled out:

- Full Keyboard Access: off

- Switch Control: off

- Hover Text: off (this is not the Hover Text bubble)

How I clear it: hover the same element again and move the cursor away cleanly, or lock/unlock the iPad, or restart.

My guess at the cause: when the Universal Control cursor crosses back over the screen edge while hovering an element, the "hover ended" event seems to get lost, so the highlight is never dismissed. (Inference — happy to be corrected.)

Questions:

1. Has anyone else seen this on iPadOS 27?

2. Is there a user-facing setting to fully disable pointer hover effects? (Accessibility → Pointer Control → Pointer Animations only disables cursor morphing; the element highlight can remain.)

3. Any way to prevent it besides restarting?

Thanks!

Under Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control, options like Pointer Animations only turn off cursor shape-morphing (such as the pointer turning into an app icon shape). They do not disable the system-wide lift or highlight box that appears over tappable UI elements. Because Universal Control renders the native iPadOS pointer interface on the iPad side, it inherits these system-level hover states.

Try this

Yes. You do not need to lock the screen or restart the iPad to clear a stuck highlight box:

  • Tap the screen: A direct touch/tap on the iPad screen or a quick click with the trackpad/mouse on that specific element (or anywhere neutral) usually forces iPadOS to re-evaluate the focus/hover state and dismiss the box.
  • Swipe from the edge: Bringing the Mac cursor back onto the iPad, purposely gliding it smoothly over the stuck element, and then exiting the screen edge slowly through an empty area (rather than darting across while hovering a button) prevents the missed "hover-exit" event.
  • Toggle Universal Control briefly: Disconnecting and reconnecting Universal Control from the Mac's Displays system settings or turning Wi-Fi/Bluetooth off and on for a second re-syncs the pointer state without a full iPad reboot.
