macOS 15.8.1 frequently fails to switch user desktops

When trying to change from my desktop to my wife's (or vice/versa) os 15.8.1 frequently stalls and drops back and expects me to logon again. Then it will freeze and not do anything requiring a hard reboot to solve the problem.

I asked about this a few months ago and got two suggestions. I tried one and it worked for a while. I wanted to find the response but Apple Support happily has lost all my previous requests for help so I couldn't find it.

Thanks - Terry

What you are describing sounds like a problem with Fast User Switching.

When both you and your wife are logged in, switching sometimes takes you back to the login screen and can then leave the Mac stuck with a persistent spinner, requiring a forced restart. It happens in either direction and, as you have  noticed, does not seem to happen when the other person is logged out.

Since a previous troubleshooting step apparently helped for a while, I would  start there rather than changing anything more substantial.

Go to System Settings >> Menu Bar >> Fast User Switching, turn it off, restart the iMac, and then turn it back on.

After that, test switching between the two accounts, including after the Mac has been sitting idle for 20–30 minutes. Apple: Switch quickly between users on Mac

There is one detail I would pay particular attention to: whether the failure happens after the Mac has actually gone to sleep, or whether it can also happen when the Mac has simply been sitting idle.

Since you think the problem may have started before macOS 15.8.1, I also would not assume that the 15.8.1 update is responsible.

The external SSD is worth keeping in the picture because macOS is running from it, but there is  nothing so far that points to the SSD itself being faulty.

If the switching problem continues, check the SSD's connection and run Disk Utility >> First Aid on the relevant volumes. Apple: Repair a storage device with Disk Utility

If it happens again, try to note what you see before restarting: whether the password is accepted and you are then returned to the login screen, whether the spinner appears immediately, whether the Mac had just woken from sleep, and whether the external SSD continues to work normally.

Those details should help narrow down what is actually failing.

If the problem continues after these checks, Apple Diagnostics would be a sensible next step to check the iMac's hardware. Apple: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

For now, I would not delete either user account, reinstall macOS, or replace the SSD. There is no need to go that far until we have more evidence about the cause.

What you are describing is that switching between your account and your wife’s account sometimes returns you to the login screen, after which the iMac can become completely unresponsive and require a forced restart.

There is not enough information yet to identify the cause, and I would avoid assuming that the macOS update is responsible until we know more.

The fact that you previously received two suggestions, tried one, and found that it worked for a while is useful. If you remember what that suggestion was, or what you changed, please include it. That may help avoid repeating something you have already tried and may provide a useful clue.

It would also help to clarify exactly how you are changing users. If you are using Fast User Switching, please say so and indicate whether both accounts normally remain logged in. If you are instead logging out of one account and then logging into the other, please say that.

Please also describe what happens immediately before the freeze. In particular, does the login screen appear normally? Can you move the pointer, click, or type at that point? Does the problem occur every time you switch users or only occasionally? Does it happen when switching in both directions, or only when changing from one particular account to the other?

It would also be useful to know whether this started after updating to macOS 15.8.1, or whether it was already happening beforehand.

One useful diagnostic test, once we have clarified the above, would be to completely log out of one account before logging into the other rather than using Fast User Switching. If the problem does not occur when doing this, that would give us a useful clue about the circumstances in which the freeze occurs.

For now, I would avoid making further substantial system changes until these details are established.

Please also provide the exact iMac model/year and processor shown in  > About This Mac. “21.5-inch iMac” by itself is not enough to identify the particular hardware configuration.

Apple's explanation of Fast User Switching may also help you identify which method you are using: Apple Support: Fast User Switching.

If the iMac becomes completely unresponsive again, Apple documents holding the power button until the Mac shuts down when it cannot be restarted normally. This can result in the loss of unsaved work: Apple Support: If your Mac doesn't respond.

The details about the previous fix, exactly how you are switching users, what remains responsive when the problem occurs, how often it happens, and when it began should give us a much better starting point without assuming a cause.

Thanks Owl - here more info:

I have an 2019 iMac 21.5" with a 3.6GHz quad core Intel core i3 with the original HD replaced by an external SSD.

Both of us stay logged on and use fast switching usually from the screen shown here:

The problem happens going both directions but does not happen if one of us is logged out. I'm pretty sure this has been happening for at least a month, so perhaps before the .1 update.

I was logged on when this screenshot was made. If I was away for about 20 min and, occasionally, if she would want to log on, the system would attempt to switch and then just go to my logon. I can't remember exactly what would happen next but I seem to remember if another attempt was made the system would just hang (a persistent spinner) and we'd have to hard reboot to get back to normal. If it happens again in the near future I'll make notes to better track what happens. This isn't a killer problem but it is annoying - especially to her. Maybe I can use it for an excuse to get a new iMac for Christmas... ;-)

Thanks for your help.
