Old HP printer won't work with iMac since Golden Gate 27.0.1 (I think)

Hi - I have a 2023 iMac, M3. My printer is an old HP laser (B&W) that connects via USB-A / USB-C (no Wi-Fi). I can't be sure, but I think it stopped working with my iMac after I installed the Golden Gate 27.0.1 OS update. I went to the HP website to see whether they had any driver updates. None for Mac. The printer does work because it will print a test sheet (when I press one of the buttons on the printer). The error messages I'm getting (on iMac) are: "filter failed," "data failed," and "The printer software is not compatible with this device."

I've been trying to print documents from Adobe, Preview, and Microsoft Word. None will print.

I've tried "resetting printing system" and then adding the printer back on. To no avail.

I'd appreciate any help. TIA.

Hi,

Try to install Rosetta2, since many older HP printers rely on drivers built for Intel processors.

Try to install Rosetta2 with Terminal command:

  1. Open the Terminal app on your Mac (press Command + Space, type "Terminal", and hit Enter).
  2. Copy and paste the following command into the window, then press Return:
  3. bash
softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

If installing Rosetta doesn't work try the following;

1 - open System Settings and go to Printers and Scanners.

2 - Option click in the Default printer box to bring up the "Reset Printer System" box.

3 - click on the Reset Printer System box.

4 - reboot your Mac and open the System Settings ➙ Printers and Scanners.

5 - click on Add Printer and see if your HP Laserwirter printer will add and work as expected.
