If by “group of contacts” they mean that “XYZ & +91 99999 ” represents multiple contacts, that is generally not what it means.
When you see an incoming call in the Phone app’s Recents list displayed as:
+91 99999 & XYZ
it generally means that the phone has found a contact entry associating XYZ with the number +91 99999 and seperate contact with only with the number +91 9999 without a name.
This can happen in a few ways:
- XYZ is saved with +91 99999 in your Contacts.
- The contact may be stored in your iCloud account, Google account, Exchange account, or another account that is enabled for Contacts on the iPhone.
- The same phone number may be saved more than once—once with the name XYZ and once as a separate contact containing only the number.
- The number +91 99999 may exist without a name in the same Contacts account or in another email account that synchronises Contacts with your iPhone.
- If multiple contact accounts contain the same number, iOS may link or combine information from those contact records, causing the name to appear alongside the incoming number.
For example:
iCloud Contacts:
XYZ → +91 99999
Google Contacts:
+91 99999 → No name
In this situation, the Phone app may still display:
XYZ & +91 99999
because iOS has found a matching contact record among the contact accounts enabled on the device.
Therefore, seeing both the name and number in Recents does not necessarily mean there is only one contact entry. The same number could exist in multiple contact databases or accounts, with one entry containing the person's name and another containing only the number.
