Keeping the 2014 MacPro will restrict you to macOS 11.7.11, no future updates to macOS, and continue dwindling choices of third-party application software that remain supported on Big Sur.
Depending upon your budget and computing requirements, a Mac Mini M5 Pro, or Mac Studio M5 Max configuration with a 32-inch display might be a huge performance and ergonomic upgrade over that 2014 MacPro. Either choice will now restrict you to macOS 27 Golden Gate (or later) as the operating system choice. The power button on the Mac mini is on the bottom, and on the Mac Studio it is still on the rear corner.
Pages v11.2 is the last compatible version of Pages for macOS Big Sur. The current Pages (v15.4) in the Mac App Store requires macOS Tahoe (26) or later. Apps that can still be installed on the 2014 Mac Pro with macOS Big Sur are:
- LibreOffice 25.8.n (Intel) - free MS Office clone with limited read-only Pages document support
- Pages v11.2 (only if you previously installed Pages from the Mac App Store)
- Launch Mac App Store and sign in with the same Apple ID used previously to install it.
- Press cmd+0 (zero)
- Locate Pages on the Purchase screen and if download is indicated, click that.
- One or more dialogs will appear. Do not click Cancel. When asked for install of last compatible, click that.
- Firefox 157 still supports macOS 10.15 and later. That will likely change sooner than later.
I excluded Softmaker's Office 2026 from the above as it now requires macOS Ventura (13.*) or later, though it is also supported on Windows 11 or Linux. The Brave Browser now requires macOS Monterey (12.*) or later.
