iPhone 16 Pro unable to download iOS 27.0.1 update

Hello,

I am unable to download the iOS 27.0.1 update on my iPhone 16 Pro.

I downloaded iOS 27.0. It was nearly the next day and I saw that iOS 27.0.1 was available. I’ve tried downloading it many times, but with no success. I am prompted with the same ‘Update Failed’ message.

At this point, it takes a very long time for the “Checking for updates…” message to finally disappear and the software update actually present itself with a request option.

I have tried toggling off and on the Low Data Mode feature, as I saw in another thread that that sometimes worked. My VPN is turned off. I have strong WiFi connected, my battery is always above 50% (if not charging), and I have nearly 100 GB of storage left.

I am suspicious that there is an issue with a queue on my phone. I have tried to find files to delete in the iOS section of the iPhone Storage portion of the General settings in hope that I could ‘unblock’ or remove a duplicate (and stuck) request to download the update, but I have no option to delete anything.

I have no Mac/laptop either, so trying to get iTunes on a different device to force the download is not an option for me either.

Interestingly, my SoundCloud app never launches successfully. It only stays in a perpetual loading icon on my phone.

Also interesting, when I try to download app updates in the App Store, they never actually download. The downloads fail as a prompt comes up for each app that says so. I did manage to figure out how to fix this. I toggle off and on the “Set Time Automatically” feature (Settings > General > Date & Time), then had to cancel each update request individually and manually update each one. Pressing “Update All” is no longer a convenient feature.

Lastly, I did see an option to download a 26.Something iOS update, but I chose to download the 27.0 iOS update instead, and that’s when all this trouble started. It’s becoming very frustrating. Please help.

Turning off VPN is not sufficient to solve VPN conflicts. You must delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes "break" VPN, and it needs to be removed. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

This sounds more like a network or Apple services connection issue than a stuck iOS update.

Try these first:

  • Keep Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically turned on.
  • Restart the iPhone.
  • Try a different Wi-Fi network.
  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Check iPhone Storage for a partially downloaded iOS update and delete it if available.
  • Temporarily disable/remove VPN, custom DNS, or network-filtering profiles.

Since App Store updates and SoundCloud are also failing, the issue likely affects internet authentication or network settings, not just iOS 27.0.1.

Hello,

Thank you for replying.

Coincidentally, my VPN no longer works at the same time as this iOS fiasco. I am in touch with their support team directly to try and have the VPN function like normal (as it had prior to the iOS update).

Following your directions, it seems my VPN profile has already been emptied. I only see a “Add VPN Configuararion…” selection to choose.

I will echo my issues with the iOS update and failure to download updates for apps from the App Store with the VPN support team.

I am not a tech wizard, but if I had to guess, they might be related. My VPN has caused me several issues in the past—even though at this point, the VPN seems to be out of the picture while these iOS device persist. I believe having the VPN on when I did update my iOS. Then again, perhaps I’m wrong. Either way, I’m just desperate.
