Move to iOS WhatsApp migration shows 'Not compatible' and times out.

 Subject: Move to iOS: WhatsApp migration fails with "Not compatible with iOS" due to ContentProvider SecurityException and 10-minute timeout

 Component: Move to iOS (Android Client & iOS Setup Assistant Receiver)

 Move to iOS Android Version:4.0.3 (Build 3038, targetSdk: 34)

 iOS Version:iOS 18.7.8 (iPhone 13 Pro)

 Android Source:Samsung Galaxy S21 5G (SM-G991B), Android 15

 WhatsApp Version:2.26.38.73

 #### Issue 1: Unhandled ContentProvider SecurityException Reported as "Not Compatible"

 When the user finishes the WhatsApp export flow on Android (ExportMigrationActivity), WhatsApp returns RESULT_PREPARATION_COMPLETED (result code

 100).

 When Move to iOS queries content://com.whatsapp.provider.migrate.ios/files, WhatsApp returns a SecurityException: Provider access is disabled.

 Instead of reporting a meaningful error or prompting a retry, Move to iOS treats this as an incompatibility and flags WhatsApp as "Not compatible

 with iOS / 0 items", giving the user no recourse.

 #### Move to iOS Client Log Snippet:

 ```text
V whatsapp: did receive a result code. code=100
E DatabaseUtils: Writing exception to parcel: java.lang.SecurityException: Provider access is disabled.
V whatsapp: did receive an error from files. error=java.lang.SecurityException: Provider access is disabled.
 ```

 #### Issue 2: Strict 600-Second (10-Minute) Selection Screen Timeout Breaks Large Transfers

 For users with large chat databases and media (>10 GB, ~100k files), WhatsApp's on-device MessagesExporterService takes approximately 10 to 12

 minutes to serialize and hash files.

 Move to iOS enforces a hard 600-second (10-minute) inactivity timeout while waiting on the data fragment. When this timeout expires, Move to iOS

 disconnects from the iOS server, transitions to retry, and terminates the session:

 ```text
m2ios Pushed fragment with tag: data
// Exactly 10 minutes and 25 seconds elapse during WhatsApp packaging:
ServiceDiscoveryManager Started service discovery.
m2ios Pushed fragment with tag: retry
m2ios Migration cancelled.
 ```

 If WhatsApp finishes packaging at minute 10:20, Move to iOS has already closed the transfer session 20 seconds earlier.

 #### Suggested Fixes for Apple:

 1. Extend or remove the 600-second timeout on the data selection screen while a third-party exporter foreground service (like WhatsApp's

  MessagesExporterService) is actively running.

 2. Handle SecurityException from third-party content providers with an explicit error dialog ("WhatsApp refused access to exported files; please

  check WhatsApp permissions") rather than a generic "Not compatible with iOS" failure.

There are two scenarios.

  • WhatsApp Chat is on the Android Device
  • WhatsApp Chat is backed up on Cloud Drives

WhatsApp Chat is on the Android Device:

  • Move to iOS only transfers WhatsApp chats that are locally present on the Android device.
  • If the chats exist only in Google Drive and are not restored onto the Android phone first, Move to iOS cannot see or move them.

If all your WhatsApp chats are on the Android Device and have not taken a chat backup then... Please use --> Move from Android to iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple ... Select the WhatsApp App while selecting which data you want to transfer from an Android device to iOS.

WhatsApp Chat is backed up on Cloud Drives

  • Google Drive backups cannot be read or imported by iOS.
  • Android → Google Drive and iOS → iCloud are two separate worlds that do not speak to each other. No official bridge exists.
  • iOS cannot restore an Android WhatsApp backup directly.
  • A Google Drive backup cannot be signed into or restored on an iPhone.

WhatsApp Chat backed up on any Cloud Drive may not get fetched. The Move process cannot extract data from Google Drive or any other Drive where the chat backups are stored using an Android device; I presume iCloud Drive is not one of them. My experience says you can't transfer the WhatsApp Backup which was done using an Android because on Android, WhatsApp chat history is not stored on iCloud, on iOS it is.

That may be possible with third-party software. Warning!; WhatsApp data through third-party software has the risk of data being compromised. Because the data will be churned through third-party servers, which may or may not be encrypted. Be judicious while selecting the software and taking this call.

If WhatsApp Chat backup has been enabled on your Android device and some chats are missing, please contact the app developer via the --> App Support or WhatsApp FAQ  , Or Restoring your chat history - WhatsApp FAQ or Contact WhatsApp

WhatsApp data transfer from an Android phone to an iPhone is not restricted by a fixed time limit. The transfer may take considerable time depending on the amount of WhatsApp data being moved, including chats, photos, videos, documents, and other media.

The important thing is to keep both phones awake and connected throughout the transfer. On the Android phone, make sure the screen does not automatically lock or go to sleep. If necessary, temporarily set Screen timeout/Screen lock to “Never” (or the longest available duration) until the transfer is completed.

Also keep both devices adequately charged or connected to power, and avoid switching apps, disconnecting Wi-Fi, or interrupting the transfer. The transfer should be allowed to complete on its own, even if it takes a long time.

In short, there is no need to rush the WhatsApp transfer because of a time limit; the priority is to prevent either device from sleeping, losing its connection, or being interrupted during the process.
