Maps zoom level resets in CarPlay after voice updates; how to set a default?

I want to set the zoom level on Maps in CarPlay. When we drive long trips, neither zoomed all the way in or out works for me. I usually select the entire trip zoom (top right) and go in two pluses (see the photo).

The problem is that every time Maps speaks an update (construction ahead, emergency vehicle, etc.) it Zooms all of the way out and stays there. This happened ever few minutes in one recent stretch that had construction.

Is there any way to set a default zoom setting in Maps on CarPlay? Or create a shortcut to go to that setting? And call it via Siri?

I am using an iPhone 18 Pro with iOS 27.0.1.

The Apple Maps icon in the left sidebar does not appear to be the active navigation app.

The fact that Apple Maps is visible in the sidebar doesn't mean it is providing the navigation. CarPlay can keep Maps among the recent apps while another navigation app—such as Google Maps or Waze—is actually driving the map display.

CarPlay → Google Maps is most likely the active navigation app, while Apple Maps is merely present in the sidebar.

Google Maps is not an Apple product. Contact the app developer here --> App Support or Google Maps Help - Google Support

If you're still having trouble with your car's audio system using CarPlay or Bluetooth, try the Aux cable. To get it fixed, there are two options:

  1. Take your car to a reputable car dealer or car audio specialist. They have experienced technicians who can diagnose the problem with the Aux cable. This could be a loose connection, a faulty cable itself, or an issue with the system's Aux port. They'll be able to repair the issue or recommend a replacement cable if needed.
  2. Consult your car's infotainment system manuals. These manuals often include troubleshooting sections that might address common Aux cable problems. You might find instructions for resetting the system, cleaning the Aux port, or confirming the cable's compatibility.

Before taking your car to a dealer, it's always a good idea to check the manuals first. This can sometimes save you time and money if it's a simple fix you can handle yourself. However, if the manuals don't offer a solution, or you're uncomfortable tinkering with the system, then a car audio specialist is the way to go.

Refer to the list of cars that are compatible with CarPlay --> iOS - CarPlay - Available Models

Most cars today are designed to support either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay at a time, not both simultaneously. This limitation comes from how the infotainment system establishes a connection: it prioritizes one protocol (Android Auto or CarPlay) depending on the connected device.

Here’s how it typically works:

  • Single protocol per session: When you plug in an Android phone, the system launches Android Auto. If you later connect an iPhone, you’ll need to disconnect the Android device first, then switch to CarPlay.
  • Manual switching: Some cars allow you to toggle between Android Auto and CarPlay in the infotainment settings, but you still can’t run them side by side.
  • Device priority: If both devices are connected, the car usually defaults to the first one it detects. To change, you must remove or disable the current connection.
  • Reason for limitation: Running both simultaneously would require parallel handling of two distinct ecosystems, which complicates interface design, audio routing, and driver safety compliance.

A few premium or newer infotainment systems are starting to experiment with multi-device support, but it’s rare. For most drivers, the practical solution is:

  • Use Android Auto if you want to connect an Android device.
  • Disconnect and switch to CarPlay if you want to use an iPhone.

"Don't try to set a zoom."

Not a helpful response.

If driving 70 mph on an Interstate for hours and hours, seeing the next 1/4 mile on the map is useless. Seeing traffic backups or issues far in advance allows me to select alternative routes that Maps does not suggest. I did that on the way home on the trip in the photo. If I had zoomed all the way in, I would not have been aware of the issues.

Software should work the way people want it to. People should not have to adapt to software.

And yet, we do have to adapt to software as we often don't program or design it. Expecting something to work because you want it to work a certain way, isn't often how anything works. I'm assuming you've read this about using Apple Maps in CarPlay? --> Change the map view in CarPlay - Apple Support

And we don't know which car infotainment system you're connected to? Is it touch screen, where you can use your fingers to zoom in and out? Does it use a controller wheel, where you can zoom in and out?

That is what I am trying to do, adapt. I am looking for a way to set the zoom level.

Considering that the new OS27 is supposed to be supported by AI and allow verbal descriptions for 'shortcuts', I asked if anyone knows how to make this happen.

Creating a shortcut that I can ask Siri to do would be great. Verbal rather than touching the screen would be far safer to keep my eyes on the road.

It is Toyota RAV 2021. It is touch screen. I don't seem to be able to use pinch and zoom (do any screens support that in CarPlay?). Apple supplies a +/- touch setting on the right. At the top right is a button to toggle between all the way in and all the way out. Neither of those extremes works for me. When driving in the city, I like all the way in and out two or three minus clicks. When driving long distances, I like all the way out and then in two or three pluses. Those options are described in the first two bullet points in your link.

I can accomplish everything else described on that link except that I have to keep resetting the zoom level every time that Maps notifies me of something (accident ahead, shorter route, construction, etc.).

"Don't try to set a zoom."

Yet that link you sent to me describes exactly how to set the zoom level.

"No I told you not to set a zoom because.."

I did not see that in your original response.

I appreciate your concern for our safety. My spouse drives Maps while I drive the car. She is annoyed at having to reset the Maps setting.

I am looking for help at setting the zoom. I would think it could be done by using a shortcut combined with a Siri request.

If no one knows how to do that, I thank you for attempting to help.
