"Hand" tool not showing up to edit shape mask

The "hand" tool isn't showing up when I go to edit a shape mask anymore. So for example, when I'm trying to make a bigger picture fit inside a smaller space by changing the size and dragging the shape, it isn't allowing me to drag the shape.

I've tried restarting my computer and uninstalling/reinstalling Keynote to no avail.

What version are you using?

What do you mean by the "hand" tool? Do you mean this:

or this:

or what? Maybe a screenshot would hep…

In the mean time try this:

  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it. This is a bit harder, because a new user can't access a different user's stuff. You would need to temporarily move your Library out of your own user's Pictures folder up to the general "Users" folder.

Do you use any VPNs, Mac "Cleaners" or "Virus catchers?" If so try moving those out, since thy are known to corrupt some processes.

If you have to, take a picture of the screen with your phone.

Do we need to see the cursor?

Is the object that you're trying to select listed in the Object List? This is a "rounded rectangle" that I'm using as a Mask, in the Object List:

You can select an object there rather than clicking on it.

I can't get a screenshot of it because the cursor doesn't show up when I go to take one. But when you double-click an image to bring up the image mask, you can usually drag the actual image around to fit the mask. But I can't.

I'm using Keynote version 15.4 (7051.0.79). I'll try restarting in Safe Mode and making a new user. I don't use any VPNs or any of those "cleaner"/"virus" apps on this machine.

I've attached a picture here that I took with my phone.

When I double-click the image, a little hand used to show up so I could drag the picture (the soccer ball) anywhere inside the bounding box. Now, I just get the arrow instead of the hand, and I can't move the picture unless I click on the "photo" image in the bottom left (currently blue in the picture) and use my arrow keys to nudge the picture around inside the box.

None of the above fixes worked (safe mode, creating a new user), and uninstalling/reinstalling the app didn't do it, either.

Thank you for your help!
