Final Cut Camera on iPhone 17 fails to maintain 240FPS with attendant motion artifacts.
Final Cut Camera * SDR HEVC 1080P 240FPS * Fails to Maintain Frame Rate * Motion Artifacting
We have an application for a client that involves shooting content at 240FPS via the Final Cut Camera ("FCC") capture engine / applet running on iPhone 17 hardware. The media is shot at 240Hz resolved to 29.97Hz, edited and displayed as slow-motion content.
Recently, we began to experience issue with sync across multiple cameras and frame cadence issues (choppy / jerky capture / decoding). Upon closer investigation, we have determined that FCC consistently fails to record at a full 240FPS. In fact, our testing has shown that FCC never shoots at the same frame rate twice!
Test conditions:
- Final Cut Camera, latest update
- iPhone 17
- iOS 26.6.2
- All radios OFF (cellular, wifi, bluetooth)
- Tests conducted after full cold boot with no other background applications running
- 1080 HD Rec 709 H.265 240 FPS
- Internal Storage
- Timecode: Record Run
Interesting to note: Test captures performed using the stock, bundled iOS camera applet, using the same capture format, are dead-nuts on, every time, without fail. All clips captured with the stock camera application come in at exactly 239.50Hz.
It's unfortunate, as we are now forced to abandon FCC, with its attendant enhanced functionality, until such time as the issue is identified and resolved.
Thanks for your help! Anyone else experiencing this issue??
