Apple cash card identity verification silliness

So I get an e-mail from Apple saying that "Starting on November 9, Green Dot Bank will begin requiring users to

verify their identity in order to reload their Apple Cash balance. You can do so at any time from your device by going to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Cash." You're supposed to click on the "Verify Identity" on the Apple Cash page on your phone to do that. If "Verify Identity" is not offered as a selection, you have completed verification. OK, so I call that up that page and press the "Verify Identity" button. It asks for SS#, birthdate, name, and address. I press continue, and it asks for those things all over again. I enter them again and again and, same thing. Nutso. Then I get an e-mail from Apple saying that gee, we can't verify your identity. Need to call them up. So I go back to that Apple Cash page on my phone, and the "Verify Identity" button isn't there anymore. Job done, but Apple doesn't seem to have a clue. Wringing hands ....

Yes, I’m on iOS 27.0.1. It worked without any issues and I transferred several hundred dollars from my Chase account to Apple Cash.

If your iPhone is an SE 2 (second generation) I believe your device can upgrade to iOS 27. I understand you may not want to do this. I get it.

Apple Cash terms and conditions state you must maintain your device at most recent compatible iOS version. You guessed it, iOS 27.

I can’t say that’s the specific issue with a high degree of certainty. But it’s certainly a possibility. I see you having two paths forward. Contact Apple Support and they may transfer you to an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank. Support may be able to confirm, but since this just launched today. This could certainly be a bug.

Let me know how you want to proceed and I can post contact information etc. Sorry. I’m just the messenger.

I suspect that’s part of it, but we’re just Apple users like yourself. No one else has reported an issue, so it could be the iOS version. I’m still going to urge you to contact Apple Support. They may have additional information or experience with this.

If you’re in the US, please call  1-800-MY-APPLE, or consult the support article below.

Sounds like Green Dot might be tightening-up their KYC practices:

See following except from the Apple Cash T&C:

REQUIRED PERSONAL INFORMATION

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. As far as my updates are telling me, iOS27 is just beta right now.

iOS 27 and 27.0.1 are released.

Are you already running a beta?

But yes, maybe Apple Cash is especially particular about versions. I was one fractional version behind.

If you’re already running a beta, all bets are off.
