Pages v. 15.3.1 crashes every few days

I’m on macOS 27.0 (Have not yet updated to 27.0.1)

Mac Studio M4 with 1 TB HDD.

It's happened at least three times in the past couple of weeks, where I'm typing in a document and suddenly pages crashes.

Before I updated to Pages v15.4, I was using Pages v15.3.1 on macOS 27.0 and 27.0.1 with no Pages crashes whatsoever. I always formally Quit Pages when I am done using it, and do not let it remain open with a document for days on end. Clicking the red titlebar traffic light will close a Pages document but not quit the application (you probably knew that).

I never run any anti-virus or so-called Mac "cleaning" apps as these have been know to damage Pages and other applications over the years.

My M4 Mac Mini Pro is shutdown daily and restarted when I rise in the morning.

  1. Are there any other applications mysteriously crashing on you?
  2. Have you installed any third-party software just prior to Pages crashing events?
  3. Using any custom downloaded fonts that you are using in the documents when it crashes?
  4. Removed any fonts that you were unaware that Pages might depend?
  5. Have you rebooted your Studio into Recovery mode and ran Disk Utility First Aid on the startup drive?
  6. Have you rebooted your Studio into Safe Boot mode to clear System caches and rebuild System databases (including the font database)?
  7. Only after a Pages crash, have you pressed and held the shift key while launching Pages to avoid reloading the last saved execution state?

away for measurable time. The operating system needs to be rebooted on some more frequent cycle than when updates become available, as this is one way to keep operating system and application Caches uncluttered, and System databases rebuilt. Your instability may arise from not doing this.

Updating to macOS 27.0.1 may temporarily correct things but probably not for long if continuing prolonged system uptimes.

Thanks for the great suggestion to minimize my open Pages documents into my Pages doc icon! I am trying it now. I think changing that setting is gonna do the same for any app, and I actually wish I could do it just for Pages. since that is the one where I typically have 5–10 or even more open, minimized documents at any time! If I minimize an open window for a different app to the dock icon… I am likely to forget that it's there and won't remember to right click and check for the diamond mark to the left of the item name.

The reason I go so long between restarting my Mac is not because I have concerns about that causing any problems. It's because I virtually always have a bunch of projects, tasks, etc. I'm doing pending at the same time.

I don't suppose there's a way, once I have a bunch of open pages documents minimized to the doc icon… that I could shut down in order to install an update or just restart as routine maintenance and then have all those open pages documents reappear minimized to that doc icon.

Thanks!

In contrast, I minimize my open Pages documents into my Pages Dock icon, rather than accumulate them on the right-side of the Dock. To me, that is clutter and can be changed in Settings > Desktop & Dock > Minimize windows into application icon. Right-clicking the Pages Dock icon will show this list of open documents preceded by a ◇ symbol.

I have been shutting down my Macs for years without hardware issues, either overnight, or when I will be away for measurable time. The operating system needs to be rebooted on some more frequent cycle than when updates become available, as this is one way to keep operating system and application Caches uncluttered, and System databases rebuilt. I usually have many Pages documents open & on the R side of the dock.

I do not shut down my computer & typically restart when there is an update or I have a problem.

No other apps crashing.

No custom fonts D/L.

I have not tried your steps; 5,6 or 7 but have saved your reply.

Soon, I will close my open documents & Safari tabs & shut down to install the 27.0.1 update.

If Pages crashes after that (I suspect it will) I will try #7 1st.

Also will Run EtreCheck

Thanks!
