stuck on email client and unable to force shutdown

My iPad keeps sticking on email. Email continues to work but I cannot shut iPad down or force restart. Using a friend’s old iPad so answering technical questions might prove difficult. First time, I left it for several hours and it sorted itself but not for long. Second time, it just didn’t do anything. I gave it to my neighbour in frustration and she did get it to shut down eventually. It seemed to work well after I upgraded platform to 27? Then, this morning, it froze again like before. The best I have read that I have not tried is to allow battery to run out……could take a long time as currently at 99% after an overnight charge and unable to use!

It is an iPad 10th generation. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue. Connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge. Then, while still connected to the Power Adaapter:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button; do not release the button until...
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

NB: Ignore the Power-off slider when it appears; continue to hold the top button until you see the Apple logo (this may take another 15-20 seconds). When performed correctly, the iPad will restart.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Thank-you! I have tried the force restart procedure more times than I can remember and it does not work and then eventually it does - no rhyme nor reason 🤷‍♀️

I have the iPad working again as, ironically, the force restart procedure worked right after I wrote my plea!! What I have not tried is resetting my iPad settings but more likely return to factory settings if and when this happens again.

Thanks again
