Motion hole effect shadow not applying to drop zone in Final Cut Pro

Hole with a Shadow-

I want to create something in Motion that produces the "effect" in FCP of a hole through a clip to reveal an another clip or image where the breached layer casts a tiny edge shadow on what's revealed. I've started this as a generator hoping I could place it above a FCP clip and use the generator's drop zone to include what's being revealed. All I have is one group in which I have a Circle converted to a mask that has the behavior overshoot, and below that layer is a drop zone. In FCP, it's doing close to what I want, only the shadow is tripping me up. In Motion, I seem to only be able to put a drop shadow on the group, which makes the shadow appear on the FCP layer I've placed it above, not the item in the drop zone. I want to be able to add this hole one or multiple times to a clip, with, of course, different images reveal under each. Am I even close to being on the right path? I'm very new to this. I'm using Creative Studio on Golden Gate. Thank you!

In Motion, Create an Effect. Select the Effect Layer and publish the Drop Shadow parameters. Set the Drop Shadow parameters to a default that you think you would **usually** use.

Create your Mask shapes... figure as many as you're likely to need. These should all be in the same group.

To the Effect Layer, Add an Image Mask and apply the Group of shapes. In the Image Mask inspector, check Invert Mask.

You can publish the position, size/scale, parameters for each of the shapes as well as the Opacity (either the shape's Fill Opacity or the Layer's Opacity) to show/hide/fade them in Final Cut. I would also recommend publishing the Roundness.

I would also recommend that you use On-Screen controls for the shapes you use to control Position, and maybe size and/or roundness. (Cross that bridge when we get there!)

If you've successfully created a Circle "hole" in the Drop Zone, all you need to do is publish the Drop Shadow parameters you need of the Drop Zone layer. You won't be able to see it in Motion unless you switch the Canvas View option to Transparent or Alpha Overlay (View menu - Channels - Transparent/Alpha Overlay). The Drop Shadow will be visible in Final Cut if Generator is placed over other clips.

I think you may be describing the opposite of what I've done. I do not have a hole in a drop zone. Because I'm looking for something that can affect a single clip (in FCP) multiple times if I'd like, I did not use a drop zone with a mask applied. I'm assuming that configuration would limit how many times I could "cut the hole" in single, front-showing layer. Hoping to learn to do something like what occurs at 24:48 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p2xPW03Z78&t=1954s

I realize there would be a way to do this with a upper drop zone that gets a little more complicated -- with multiple hole positions that I can turn on or off. Just thought a simpler solution might be available.
