iPad Update with Laptop Corrupted

I bought a used iPad 2 to 3 months ago. I noticed there were some problems when it came to charging the iPad. It would go through occasional periods where it wouldn’t charge even if it was plugged in.

The night before, I experienced the same issue and finally found a charger that would charge the iPad. However, early this morning the iPad died, and when I turned it back on, it stated that a software update for iPadOS 26.3.1. had been complete. Every time I try to activate my iPad, it tells me I am unable to, and that I need to have my iPad connected to the Internet. I have gone around and used different Wi-Fi connections, and it still told me the same. When speaking to customer support for Apple, they helped me put my iPad into recovery mode and tried using my laptop to install the update, using Apple Devices.

I’ve ran into two different problems. One, is that while downloading the update, my laptop randomly stops, and my iPad also randomly turns right back on without anyone touching it. Two, is that whenever the update starts to download, I’m told that it’s corrupted.

I cannot restore this iPad. Is this iPad a lost cause?

Given your description, your pre-owned iPad may have hardware issues. You make no mention of where, or from whom, it was purchased - but, if purchased from anywhere other than a reputable retailer, one might reasonably this perhaps being the reason that it was being resold.

You would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

Alternatively you can initiate a support case using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to hands-on test/assess the iPad and assist with troubleshooting:

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes "break" VPN, and it needs to be removed. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.
