These black & white cards appear on my M4 Pro mini running macOS 27, but not on my iPhone 14 Pro, or a new iPad. Both running iOS 27.

iโ€™m literally typing this reply on my iPhone. The OP asked for the ace of spades. Thatโ€™s a black and white card. If the OP had asked for the queen of hearts or something then that might be more challenging, but the ๐Ÿ‚ก is right there.

Or you could even get fancy with some Unicode enclosing sequences. Those work too: โ™ ๏ธŽโƒž

if someone did want the queen of hearts, then they would probably have to install a multicolour font or something along those lines. Thatโ€™s really all emoji is anyway.

The CharMap keyboard app has the Unicode playing card block available on iOS and iPadOS: ๐Ÿ‚ก

The Unicode playing card block is part of iOS and iPadOS.

Iโ€™m unaware of how to get at (most of) Unicode (solely) with the built-in on-screen keyboards however, and not using cut-and-paste or such.

As for adding an ace of spades emoji to the international standard that Apple and most other vendors follow, we (and Apple) wrong audience. You want to ask the Unicode Emoji committee to (re)consider this addition:

The chances of getting a colored Unicode character added โ€” some other glyph such as a red ace of diamonds card, and not an emoji โ€” is approximately zero.

Nope. That's a symbol, not an emoji, and it's only available on a Mac, but not on iOS devices.

Of course the OP can use Genmoji to generate an Ace of spades if they really wanted to.

Not sure where emojidb is looking for its emojis, but in the emoji keyboard on iOS devices, that is not available as shown in my screen shot.

You can of course copy it from the website on the iPad, but it does not appear as an actual emoji on Apple's emoji keyboard.

And as shown in kurt lang's reply it has been denied by the unicode consortium for an actual emoji code. So it appears to be something else, mistakenly referred to as an Emoji.

Phil0124 has the closest answer.

The only card in the actual emoji font, Apple Color Emoji.ttc, is the Joker.

๐Ÿƒ

The full deck, all in black & white, are not emojis, even though they sometimes appear in the Emoji panel. They are in the Apple Symbols.ttf font. As are a complete set of Mahjong and Dominos tiles.

I used Continuity clipboard to copy the symbol on the Mac and then paste it on the phone.

I tried a few apps, but they were complete junk. One app allowed me to do a basic copy: ๐Ÿ‚ฝ

Sadly, the app couldnโ€™t do combining characters. I wrote a little Swift app for that: โ™ โƒž

iOS does not support the combining enclosing characters very well. Thatโ€™s about all it will do.

Itโ€™s really no different than the Mac. Some characters there canโ€™t be typed. You would have to use Show Emoji & Symbols for those. And even there the default is the dumbed-down version like what the default iOS keyboard provides. So you just need an app. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s worth writing though. And that, my friends, is why you think itโ€™s impossible.

Programmers decided it wasnโ€™t worth it.

Thatโ€™s a black and white card.

Yes, but I also pointed out they're all B&W cards. Blown up here to 96 points in TextEdit to make them much easier to see.

If you're on a Mac, any card in a deck can be pulled up, even though they're not emojis. In iOS, you can't get at any of them. I would presume that's because the font Apple Symbols.ttf is not part of iOS. Or, it maybe it is, but iOS ignores displaying any of the glyphs in that font since they are not emojis.

if someone did want the queen of hearts, then they would probably have to install a multicolour font or something along those lines. Thatโ€™s really all emoji is anyway.

Yes, but no one on the receiving end would see that card. Not unless they had that same font installed.

Then how am I able to keep posting replies with these characters from iOS? ๐Ÿ˜„

I would presume that's because the font Apple Symbols.ttf is not part of iOS.

I don't know how it's implemented, but these characters are most definitely available on iOS.

Yes, but no one on the receiving end would see that card. Not unless they had that same font installed.

These are unicode symbols, and basic ones at that. That's why they're black and white. Anyone on the receiving end would see the card.

Now if you had some fancy setup, with a colour font, they might not get your full-colour queen, she'd be monochrome.

I know what you're saying. I'm only screwing around with you, but only halfway. These unicode characters are difficult to enter on iOS. They aren't in the "fun" emoji picker. You might need to paste it from somewhere else or have some app that could generate them. If there is no such app, please let me know because I could knock that sucker out in 5 minutes.

Getting a colour version of these basic unicode characters would be more of a challenge, but I still think it's possible. But because of the way iOS works, where everything is app-centric, these capabilities would be restricted to the app that recognized the custom font. Still doable, but not fun in any sense of the word.

There is no direct way to access those whatever you want to call them on an iPhone or iPad. As I said before, you can copy them for somwhere else, like the emojidb website or a previous post, or even from here and paste them because the iPad and iPhone can produce those ascii characters, but how would you actually call them up on an iPhone or iPad directly without an external source for them? Is there a source for them on the iPad or iPhone where you can see them is there a way to directly type them in a message or a document or a reply here, rather than copying and pasting them from somewhere else?
