Problem with CarPlay wireless adapter

I have 3 wireless CarPlay adapters. The same problem seems to be recurring problem so maybe someone here can help me understand. Here we go. I plug one of them into the USB-A port. Set it up, and it does what I want it to do. Plays music and creates directions on Apple Maps. Turn the car off, remove the phone from car, and usually carried somewhere on myself. Come back and the adapter doesn't work without unplugging and plugging it back in. Is there a setting on my iPhone I'm missing?
