iOS 27: iMessage and FaceTime Keep Losing Phone Number Activation

Ever since updating my iPhone 17 to iOS 27, I’ve been experiencing a recurring issue where iMessage and FaceTime randomly lose activation with my phone number.

The strange part is that both services will sometimes work perfectly for hours, or even longer, before suddenly failing again. When this happens, my phone number becomes unchecked under Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, iMessages switch to RCS, and FaceTime can no longer activate using my phone number.

Sometimes I briefly lose cellular service before this happens, but the issue persists even when I’m connected to Wi-Fi.

I’ve tried practically every troubleshooting step I can think of, including restarting my phone, toggling iMessage and FaceTime, resetting network settings, deleting conversations, checking my Apple Account settings, and repeatedly attempting to reactivate my phone number.

I’ve also spent hours troubleshooting with Verizon and Apple Support. Verizon confirmed that everything looks normal on their end and even issued me a completely new eSIM. Unfortunately, that hasn’t resolved anything.

What’s especially frustrating is that many of these troubleshooting steps seem to fix the problem temporarily. My number will successfully activate, everything will work normally, and then the exact same issue returns without warning.

Apple Support has told me they cannot escalate the issue unless I contact them while it’s actively happening. Since it’s intermittent, this makes getting any meaningful support incredibly difficult.

At this point, I’m wondering whether this is an iOS 27 software bug involving phone-number activation rather than a carrier issue.

Has anyone else experienced this exact behavior, particularly the phone number repeatedly unchecking itself under Send & Receive? Has anyone found a permanent solution rather than another temporary fix?

FaceTime and iMessage both require that your phone be able to send international SMS messages. When you're on a supported carrier, you never see these. Based on what I've heard here, you need to be disconnected from data service for more than a few hours. It's usually days or weeks. So, losing cellular service shouldn't be related but... Maybe have Verizon double-check that your account is properly provisioned for international SMS.

For what it's worth (not very much, I know), I'm not having this issue with Verizon using an iPhone 17 Pro.

One other thing. Have you updated to iOS 27.0.1?

I’ve been on two conference calls with Apple and Verizon. They have determined the issue does not lie with Verizon. Provisioning is normal, no blocks, gave a new eSIM just for kicks. Problem unsolved. Both senior Apple advisor and Verizon agent believe it to be a bug after updating to 27.0.1 (yes I’ve updated to 27.0.1 - this started after I updated to it on September 30). A full factory reset restore did not resolve - and I mean full reset no data restored - FULL WIPE. My assigned advisor heard back from the engineers and they sent me a link with the same basic troubleshooting I found from a simple google search……. This is probably the worst experience I’ve had with Apple Support. Everyone, including my assigned advisor seems to want to just pass me to the next person because they can’t figure it out.

Just to experiment I switched my phone number back to my old iPhone 11 Pro Max. Issue was gone for a whole day. I switch back to my iPhone 17. Problems return. I would say this indicates it is device specific and maybe iOS version specific. Going to the Apple Store tomorrow to express my case and maybe swap it out.

Thanks, Ingo. I'm not sure how your iMessage and FaceTime working normally on a different iPhone and carrier helps troubleshoot the issue I'm experiencing but I appreciate the feedback.

Apple is already aware of the issue and it has now been escalated to engineers to be working on this issue. I mainly came here to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same issue and found resolution since I have exhausted almost everything.

I have done everything from getting a new eSIM to even completely resetting my phone. I have screen shared almost all troubleshooting with Apple Support and they are seemingly dumbfounded. My rep, who has been very helpful, is waiting to hear back from the engineers, which they said can take 48 hours - it has been 24hrs. At this point, I'm really just hoping to connect with others experiencing the same problem and potentially find a solution while I wait. I'll be sure to return here with any updates from Apple in case they're helpful to someone else dealing with this.

I’m having the same problem—I can’t activate FaceTime or iMessage at all on my new iPhone 18 Pro Max (512GB, eSIM version). I’ve tried everything: swapping SIM cards, waiting, restarting, deleting and re-adding—nothing works.

That's not the same problem. The OP is able to activate but then loses the activation. I suggest you start your own thread. You're more likely to get the help you need.
