M4 pro 16 inch battery dying after 6 hours only using safari.

Why is safari and any web browser killing my battery? I only get around 6 hours of battery life on my macbook m4 pro 16 inch and its at 99% health. I had an m3 pro 14 inch before this and it never happend however its now been a week since migrating to this new laptop and its dying so quickly. Screenshot taken of google slides next to acitvity monitor. (university work)

Rather than playing 20 questions,

Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It changes NOTHING. Etrecheck was developed by a senior contributor here, and uses mostly system calls and simple tests to collect often-needed information.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed. Because less can be learned when your Mac is running great, best time to run is when your problems are actually occurring, if possible.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the System ClipBoard, then Pasted into an ‘Additional Text’ window in a reply on the forums.

Use Etrecheck Pro for free:

http://Etrecheck.com

The amount of data you get can be daunting. If you POST your report, some Readers here are willing to look over those reports, and can provide valuable insights.

Copy your report

In order to post your EtreCheck report, you must first copy it to the clipboard.

An easy wasy to copy your report is to use the "Share report" control in the toolbar. This text version of the report automatically removes any personal information. Never post personal information on the internet. Screenshots have been disabled for EtreCheck when running in trial mode. They are difficult to read and, unlike the text report, they can show personal information.

I doubt that Safari or any other web browser is the problem.

More likely to be power consumed by the display during those 6 hours ... and possibly what you're doing on the web (esp. viewing videos or gaming).

  • What activities are you pursuing on the web?
  • You can also turn down the brightness of the display (many people run their displays at too high brightness anyway. Set it to automatically adjust brightness.)

Check your battery settings ... "On battery" should be set to Automatic. Also Options > Slightly dim the display on battery. You could also enable Options > Optimize video streaming while on battery.

You said you migrated to your MBPro only 1 week ago. Have you fully charged the battery and has it run through a couple of full discharge & recharge cycles?

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, overheating and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, Third-party Virus scanners, Bit Torrent, or a VPN that you installed yourself.

You should remove anything of that ilk, and NEVER re-install.

Your screenshot is showing Google docs.

That suggests you may have google Chrome installed, even if you are not currently running Chrome.

That gives you a one-two punch of invasive data harvester, reporting home often, AND in inept data sync-er, searching your files in a very inefficient way, consuming system resources to do nothing worthwhile.

Chrome is particularly resource-intensive because it installs Google which renders your Mac a full time information-harvesting and -uploading "bot" for Google's purposes. Those processes can't be turned off or disabled, even if you quit the Chrome browser. Even without knowing what else is installed on that Mac it is all but assured a multitude of Google's automatically updating virus-like processes are causing your Mac to work overtime.

Get rid of it. No one needs Chrome. .

Energy Impact is an abstract, not well documented calculation that combines measures of CPU usage, network traffic, disk activity and other unidentified factors into a relative measure; it is not an absolute measure. 4.5K does seem high but at the same time your 12-hour measure of ~35.xx (it's unreadable in your screenshot but clearly only 2 digits) is quite normal, even low.

Have you shut down & restarted your MBPro to see if that resolves the issue?

You ran it for six Hours without plugging it in?

That computer is a battery-CAPABLE device, It is not optimized as a battery-operated device (it is not an iPhone.)

Your computer performs best when connected to AC power, such as the power adapter. It can use the full output of the Power Adapter AND when doing especially challenging work could also freely "borrow" power from the battery. In some cases, even with the power adapter connected, the charged state may decline during very stressful work.

When used only on battery, your computer has no extra cushion of power, and may perform more slowly. However, for ordinary non-stressful tasks this may not be objectionable (possibly not even noticeable.)

In general, you should ALWAYS connect a power source when it is possible to do so, and only run on batteries (which could be somewhat slower) when no power sources are at hand. Modern Macs maintain optimum battery charge levels under program control, and will NEVER over-charge. Connected to Power is NOT necessarily charging.

When you set it down in one place, or set it down for the night, Plug it in. Then you won’t CARE whether it would drain the battery.

As per my other reply, it is not the battery that is the issue but something in the software that got messed up i guess during migration. Safari has an energy usage of 4.5k with only 2 tabs open which is insane. My google slides are also lagging. This only happened when i migrated everything from my m3 pro to my m4 pro. nothing else has been changed to the settings of the device. I was able to use my m3 pro all day plus more without re charging it.

I can’t tell if you are being condescending with me orrrr… but I can’t do my important work because whenever I want to use any sort of program such as unreal engine while also writing down my work in safari im not able to because safari is using an incredible amount of power and processing, which means any other program is there for not going to work :).

You may have been thinking that, but unless you elaborate that concern in detail in your writing, I can't know what your concerns are.

I read that you thought the amount consumed by Safari was large, not that it was debilitating -- until this moment when you actually spelled it out for us.
