The answer is "it depends".

Outside of XProtect security updates which date back to El Capitan at least (over a decade ago) it is very rare for Apple to issue software updates as such for anything but the current macOS release (Golden Gate) and the two major versions preceding it.

I strongly recommend enabling "Install Security Responses and system files" in Software Update settings as explained in Software Update settings on Mac - Apple Support. On rare occasions Apple will update older, "unsupported" operating systems in that manner. That is the reason for my qualifier "it depends".

That setting is enabled by default, but some ill-mannered non-Apple "security" products will deliberately disable it. Needless to say, if you are using anything at all in that broad category of utterly useless garbage, don't. A lot of things won't work if you do.

Sonoma received Safari 17.*, 18.*, and 26.* – but no longer receives the latest version of Safari, 27.*.

Safari Release Notes | Apple Developer Documentation

Pages, Numbers, and Keynote now require macOS 26.* (Tahoe) or later. Even Sequoia isn't good enough. However, if you downloaded those applications when the latest versions were compatible with Sonoma, the App Store might let you download the latest versions that are compatible with Sonoma from the "Purchased" window.

Vendors like Microsoft and Adobe who have a policy of supporting only the "most recent three" have dropped – or soon will drop – support for Sonoma. You might be able to run older versions of applications you already have, but you'll find the door closed to getting updates or new ones.

There are a number of applications like Firefox (and most other third-party browsers), LibreOffice, GIMP, the non-AI parts of Affinity Studio, etc. which are useful for extending the life of versions of macOS that have fallen out of "the most recent three". The current Firefox will run even on Catalina; the current LibreOffice, even on Big Sur.

Your tag line says that you are using a Mac mini.

There is no Mac mini for which Sonoma is the "end of the line".

  • If you are using an Intel-based Mac mini (2018), you could upgrade to Sequoia. Sequoia will be one of the "most recent three" until macOS 28 comes out in about a year from now. In the meantime, you could be running Safari 27.*, and a version of macOS that is still supported by vendors like Microsoft and Adobe.
  • If you are using one of the early (M1, M2, M2 Pro) Mac minis that is compatible with Sonoma, you could upgrade to Sequoia, Tahoe, or Golden Gate. (Upgrading to Tahoe might require use of Terminal commands.)

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

I think that covers all of the Mac minis that could be running Sonoma now.

macOS Sonoma is no longer one of the 3 current versions of macOS. That means it is no longer "actively supported" as is the case at present for Sequoia, Tahoe & Golden Gate.

But that doesn't mean that Sonoma will never get another update, particularly security updates. The most recent update was Sonoma 14.8.9 on August 6, 2026. There may be future updates but there is no way to know in advance.

That said, there is nothing insecure about continuing to use Sonoma. And if you are concerned about your installed apps continuing to work (for example, MS 365 Word, PPT, etc.), they will, you just might not get further updates to them.

Some app vendors also only support the current 3 versions of macOS ... which usually means that those apps can only be newly installed on the current 3 versions of macOS ... MS365 and TurboTax are poster children for that install limitation.
