updating intel printer to silicon

My iMac is warning me my intel canon TS9551c printer won't work soon. Canon don't offer any upgrade. What can I do?

It does not appear the Canon is updating their drivers for that printer, but the good news is that the printer is AirPrint compatible so it can be installed on your Mac without the need for any of the Canon drivers.

You would need to:

  • Remove the printer at  > System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  • Make sure the printer is connected to the same WiFi network as your Mac. You can view the network using the controls on the printer. It is under LAN settings where you can configure the WiFi network.
  • Add the printer again at  > System Settings > Printers & Scanners, and this time use AirPrint/Bonjour when it pops up on the screen. It may take a couple of seconds for it to appear.
  • Verify you are now able to print.

AirPrint can use either a Wireless connection to your Mac or connected with a cable, but the most common configuration is wireless and the Mac can print to it just like an iPhone/iPad without needing a cable at all.

Thanks Jim that doesn’t sound too complicated even for my limited abilities. I’ll leave trying it I think tho’ till it stops working.

You are welcome. You have until next year when Mac OS 28 is released, usually in the September time frame.

There is always the possibility that Canon will update their drivers before then, but printer manufacturers have not been providing updates like they had previously, and have been making their printers AirPrint compatible so no drivers are needed at all. This has 2 benefits for them, it allows the the printers to be used from an iPhone/iPad where drivers cannot be installed, and also saves them them money by not having to maintain current drivers and reduce customer support for any driver related problems.
